Age Group Rank = 92/254
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00am. Ate a small bowl of cereal, a banana and took two Enduralytes.

Swung into Wawa in Glen Mills for a 12oz coffee and big bottled water and Detour bar for after race...picked up Kevin in Media at 4:45. Arrived to race site about 5:15. Biked down to body mark/transition area.

Set up transition and hit the port a potty..it was going to be a hot day! Had been pre-loading with Enduralytes since Thurs to try to avoid cramping...slugged down two more prior to race start...
Event warmup:

Just a light jog up W.R. Drive before the actual start of my run wave at 7:35. Took a hammer gel (banana) 10 minutes before...

This race turned into a Du. Unfortunately a swimmer in the previous days sprint race never came out of the water so out of respect for the family and the search team we did not swim. They found his body later on Sunday. Very sad. Same age as me. 40. Scary stuff...
Swim
  • 24m 41s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

Tried to keep the pace under control...didn't push hard but still ran 8 minute miles...legs felt good..of course!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a comfortable pace.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Not your typical swim/bike transition. We came off the Du so I just slipped off the running shoes and into the bike shoes. Pretty smooth..
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Smooth
Bike
  • 1h 16m 26s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Improved my time by 4 minutes from last year. Finished 645/1820 this year and last year 874/1921...I'll take that improvement...Legs felt good...bike fitness better..still room to get improve though.... Would like to go sub 1:10 next year...that's the goal; take off 6 minutes...can be done!!

Used two bottles of HEED on the bike; took two Enduralytes about mile 13 and also a Hammer gel (Bananna) about mile 15...
What would you do differently?:

more bike fitness..continue to improve...taken another Hammer gel closer to the end of the bike to prep for run...
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

good transition..legs felt fair running into transition...better than most races....though I knew run ahead of me was going to be tough with the heat...and the first leg being a run there was a bit more fatigue to deal with..
What would you do differently?:

I didn't go quite as quickly as I usually do...this is slower than last year by a few seconds...but I think with the heat I was taking a few extra seconds to prepare myself..
Run
  • 56m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot, hot, hot....but still flat...I ran :26 slower than last year but improved my overall standings to 649/1820 vs. a 1031/1921 last year...huge! But it also goes to show how hot it was...the Enduralytes worked!!! I could feel some cramping starting in the first mile or so but it flushed out and I was able to continue.

Like I said, I walked some aid stations just to cool off and focus on next mile...I was happy with my decision making...next year...we get better again!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really..it was a tough run and a solid mental challenge...just have to keep working on improving.....
Post race
Warm down:

So hot...so I just took an extra cold towel at the finish line and walked around a bit...I was lightheaded...ate some tomato pie...and took a recovery drink.....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It's all about fitness...I improved on every aspect really...even with a slower run..but when looking at my overall finish that was a great run for me given the heat....just have to keep working on the fitness...I can pick up some time on the bike still...

Event comments:

One of the more expensive tri's I participate in but it's always well run and organized. Really like the challenge of the course...can't wait until next year!
