Pre-race routine:

not enough sleep; my regular race breakfast of Cheerios, yogurt smoothie, and banana; left for the race about 5am
Event warmup:

set up transition in the drizzling rain, then walked to the club tent to wait for the swim start
Swim
  • 25m 53s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

when did they move the start times up by 4 minutes? My swim time was posted as 7:35, so imagine my surprised as I headed to the water around 7:28 and saw my wave already in the water! Into the water with no time to think, and then we were off! There was the usual body contact (but not as bad as what I experienced last week at North East during my relay swim). There was more sea grass floating around than I've ever experienced, but I've trained myself to "Just keep swimming!" I swam and sighted pretty well.

Target: 25:00, actual: 25:53
What would you do differently?:

swim faster dammit!
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Target: 2:30

I had the best rack spot ever, last rack near the bike out (but the longest run in from swim). I was fast and efficient and onto the bike in 2:02 (73 OA, 7 AG)
What would you do differently?:

nothing!

The Iron Girl bike route is quite hilly and challenging but I've ridden it 20-30 times and I know (and love) every inch of it. My plan was to attack the hills and hold back on the descents. With the wet, and congested roads extra caution was needed. Overall, I had a great ride and it almost felt easy. It went by in such a blur. Bike time: 1:02:59 (third fastest ever on the route)
What would you do differently?:

nothing!
Transition 2

I got slowed down by soggy socks

I knew that the run was going to hurt, and it did. This is a hilly and challenging route. I was determined not to walk any of it; I succeeded, but there were some uphills where my run was hardly different from a walk. The infamous "Gatorade Hill" nearly broke me, but once I got past it I knew that it was literally all downhill from there. My last challenge was the cramping that was starting to hit me in the hamstrings but I refused to give in to that! Finally, into the finish chute and DONE!
What would you do differently?:

nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

poured mucho water over my head and body

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My best race ever! This was my first race where I put together a good swim, a good bike, and a good run! Wow, what an experience!

Event comments:

I love the vibe and the courses are a great challenge, I just wish the event wasn't so darn big!
