Run
Comments: I was thrilled with my first mile, but I knew I wouldn't be able to hold that pace for the whole race and knew I'd have trouble if I tried to so I reigned it in. Mentally calculated where I should be with the next mile based on my time at each mile marker. It kept me occupied. Think the cold temperatures kept the fans away. Usually the streets are jammed with fans for this race. Crowd seemed a bit sparse. Still a lot of cowbell. I noticed the bands a lot today...pretty good music! Had to dodge walkers who had started off in earlier waves. (why?? there is a wave for walkers that is the last one and they didn't want to wait that long to start I guess) Even had to dodge a guy with a full knee splint on crutches trying to walk the course! Lots of other costumed runners. Love that part. It wasn't as much fun running alone. Miss Thing was several waves behind me so Peter Pan and Wendy weren't together....The first place costume was a guy dressed like a squirrel--think ICE AGE...He had an acorn in front of him dangling off something attached to his back. Hysterical! Another cute costume was the two girls with grocery bags on poster board with lables and containers hot glued to them! Anyway, around the turn around someone did yell at me as Peter Pan to cheer me on. Glad that part was recognizable!! I never stopped at the aid stations cause I was carrying my own water. However, I never bothered to grab it....not sure that was such a good idea. By mile 4 I had a nice pain under my rib cage. Kept trying to focus my breathing to get it out and press on the ribs. No luck. Figured that grabbing the water--even from my belt, would slow me down and I knew I was hunting another PR. That being said, mile 4 and 5 were kind of painful. The gentleman from the start corral caught up to me and we played pace bunny for each other to finish it out. What would you do differently?: drink water, dummy! Post race
Warm down: walked around to hunt my husband and find my daughter finishing. Food, 3 bottles of water!! Grabbed my warm clothes from my husband and threw them on! Casualty of the day: I knocked out an earring and lost one of the new earrings the girls gave me for my birthday. Event comments: PR by over 3 minutes!! Last updated: 2009-12-14 12:00 AM

up early, had some waffles and fruit, headed to Richmond. We sat in the car for a while then walked around so miss thing and I could go to costume judging. Walked back to the car to warm up. Ate some sports beans.
Watched the first wave of kids head out on their 1 mile race. THey had a kids band playing that was trying to get thecrowd into it...if it hadn't been so freaking cold there might have been more participation for them!
Walked over to the start area, hit the porta potty lines....
Found my wave and took the advice of Dano (RecTri) to get in the front of the wave. I talked with the man next to me for a bit, we pretty much ran together the whole race.
The waves moved forward a little at a time, I got my ipod set and got the beat going in my head. Cursed being so cold. It was a hard call...need to warm up some but there was almost half an hour between the first wave going out and mine so I didn't want to let the muscles get too cold in between. Was glad I had a long sleeved shirt under my costume and tights on. Had a gu with some water about 25 to 30 min prior to my wave start.
