Pre-race routine:

Up at 6, corn flakes and a pop tart for break with some water.

Decided to wear the zoot ultras for the shorts, and went with the new desoto long sleeve cooler shirt with the pockets.

Piled the wife and little one into the car and drove to Coral Springs, about 30 min drive.

Found a spot in trans for my stuff and ran off to get my race package - only to find I wasn't on the list. I had apparently forgotten to register! Crap! But lucky the RD and the guy doing the lists recognized me from other races and knew I had an ATA number so no insurance issues so they penciled me in and off I went.

Event warmup:

Wetsuit on, wife put a strip of duct tape on my neck to try and avoid the wetsuit neck slashing I get. Splashed around since I have not swam 1 open water swim this year. Usually the private lake is open a few days before the race but not this year. Tri-its went first then we lined up. Gel 10 or so before start, 310xt on the wrist.
Swim
  • 29m 46s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not much swim work done this year, so only a min or so faster than a few years ago. Also course could easily have been 100m+ long as the fastest swimmers were still over 20 mins.

Swam with shirt under wetsuit, no neo-headcap, used swim goggles.
What would you do differently?:

Either learn to swim better or accept 2/100m pace for life.

Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

310XT is a big watch, had to take it off to get the wetsuit off. Will try out the quick release thing for next race.

Still had raw neck from the wetsuit so it burned a bit spraying the sunblock. Even with a piece of duct tape on my neck.

What would you do differently?:

I still like having the shoes on the bike so I don't have to run in cleats, even if I no longer do the flying leap.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 46s
  • 42 kms
  • 34.16 km/hr
Comments:

Used my p2sl with PT training wheel + wheel cover + latex tubes + pr3 tires. Full flat kit as the pitstop can't fit into the disk.

Rode a bit harder, and was rewarded with a gain of 6.5 mins over 2 years ago. Eq difference is latex tubes, wheel cover and just the aerobottle with infinit.

Was 42/103 after the swim so had some people to catch. Passed at least 6 before getting muddled up with the sprint group, got passed by only 1 guy.

What would you do differently?:

Harder, faster, bike more, use the PM, blah blah blah.

Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Went with the Zoot ultras with no socks, but since I'm a chicken I kept a paid of socks in my jersey pocket.

No fuel belt or any liquid, just the shoes on, hat on, gone.
Run
  • 42m 57s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 18s  min/km
Comments:

This is where I caught a few more people. I felt really good and was able to hold the goal pace. I did not kill myself or sprint at the end as I need to be able to keep training for my A race in 2 weeks. But I am very pleased with how my run has improved.

Over 10 mins run improvement over 2 years ago on this race.

Post race
Warm down:

Played in the lake/on the beach with my little girl waiting for awards/draws, won some socks a long sleeve tech shirt and a hat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I can't avoid the swim much longer. I had 10+ mins of time to gain on run, but now to gain 2 more mins of run will take a lot more effort/training than 2 mins on a 30 min 1500. Lowest hanging fruit.

Event comments:

Smaller race, great for the tri-its and newbies, no after race meal (which I dont eat anyway) and it's pretty much the only avail local race in July.
