Pre-race routine:

I decided to run Megan's (my 9 year old) first 5k with her. I ran Becca's first with her. I got up and rode my bike into town to sign Becca, Megan, and Monica up. Stepped outside into a sauna. It was HUMID! Got them signed up and forgot to get them t-shirts. Took my bike to my Dad's so it would be ready for our post race ride.
Event warmup:

Chatted and talked strategy with Megan. She was confident and talking about beating her sister, mom, aunt, papa, etc :)

Comments:

First 1/2 mile was good. Megan was doing well, just following the crowd. Kept Monica (mom) in sight. Took a couple of walk breaks.
Hit the first mile mark at a surprising time of just over 11 minutes. I dumped some water on Megan's head at the aid station. Then we came up on Monica. Megan had new life and hit her mom on the shoulder as she ran past her. It wasn't long and she was struggling again.
Before the turnaround we started seeing family and team mates coming back the other way. Lots of good encouragement for Megan seemed to pick up her spirits. Monica passed us here, giving both of us good shoulder bumps in the process.
The rest of the run was a struggle. We hit the aid station again, but all they had was ice, no water. This was ok with Megan though. Megan's poor face turned a reddish purple color. We ran from power pole to power pole, walking in between.
She finished strong and had a much faster 3rd mile than 2nd mile.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Megan has not trained at all and this was a stretch for her, but she soldiered through and got it done.

Warm down:

For me? Went on HOT, HUMID 3 hour bike ride. :)
