Run
Comments: I went out with the lead group of females, I had heard that the trail was narrow so I didnt want to get stuck. The trail was challenging due to the deep, wet sand and mud. My shoes were too loose (elastic laces not tight enough) and I was worried they would slip off in the mud. After about a mile, we started to catch some of the college kids in the wave in front. What would you do differently?: I think my run was OK, I wasnt warmed up well and I was nervous to go out too fast. Transition 1
Comments: This was lame. I had put my bike shoes in plastic instead of leaving them on my bike like I usually do. My fingers were so cold, I had a hard time doing the shoe change, but overall it was easier than a swim-bike transition :-) What would you do differently?: HTFU Bike
Comments: Wet, slippery, windy, tough course. Had the weather been good, I would have loved this course. It was hard to relax because it was so cold, and the roads were wet. The rain got pretty heavy at times and I didnt have glasses on, it actually hurt my eyes, LOL. What would you do differently?: I was very cautious on the bike course, not my usual self. I wish I'd had the balls to push it more, esp on the down hills. Transition 2
Comments: Another slow Transition. This time, the feet and fingers were freezing. I put on my sopping wet run shoes and tried to get moving. The results don't show transition times. Run
Comments: Starting out I was freaking out because my feet were so numb, it felt like I was running only on my toes, then it felt like there were big rocks inside my shoes. I overheard a couple of guys saying they were feeling the same thing, so that made me feel better. By 1.5 miles my feet were starting to defrost, but they were so squelchy. I tried to follow a guy in front who looked like a good trail runner, he was so agile on the trail and I felt like a clutz, lol! My legs & lower back were tight by the end of it, tried to push it on the road up to the finish. What would you do differently?: Practice trail running Post race
Warm down: Got wrapped up in one of those silver blankets and chatted with friends. Had the volunteer make me a PB bagel because my fingers were frozen :-) Man did that taste good! Wished there was some coffee, soup or hot chocolate though! Packed up pretty quickly, got into some dry clothes (heaven!) and started the drive home. Would have loved to stay for the awards/raffle but had to go get my kids. What limited your ability to perform faster: This is my first DU, I held back a bit due to the conditions and also not knowing what to expect from this race. looking forward to doing it again, and doing it faster. Event comments: It sounds like I'm whining but really, I had a blast. On the 2nd run, I was laughing and smiling. This was a tough day but it was also a unique experience. They put on a great race, noone can help the weather. Beautiful location and i look forward to doing it again :-) I had no idea of the results until later in the day when they posted them online, was surprised to see I was 2nd female amateur and 1st in AG. My time was even faster than a few of the pros ( but I am sure they were going easy because of the conditions!). Last updated: 2010-02-23 12:00 AM

This race was a long drive from home. Got up at 4:15, on the road by 4:45. I wasnt hungry when i got up so I had some coffee and ate my waffles with PB in the car. Travelled solo to the race as hubby had to work and kids would go to a friends house. It rained on and off on the drive, the closer I got to McDowell Mtn park, the heavier the rain got.
I walked the 1.5 miles to the transition area from the car park, in the rain. Racked my bike, got my chip then stood under a canopy. This was a bad time to discover that my "waterproof" jacket is not at all waterproof. I was soaked through, and my feet were soaked. We then had to walk to the start area. I jogged a bit to get warm, in hindsight I didnt warm up enough, not enough stretching. I finally ditched my outer clothing, they assured me i would get them back at the finish, and lined up. It was warmer in the huddle of people. The pros started at 8am, then the Collegiate, then the females. So, I started at 8:06. It was really cool to see so many pros there: Sam McGlone (won it), Linsey Corbin, Michellie Jones and my friend, Kathy, doing her first race as an Elite.
