Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am (I like an early start) walked the dog, drank a Boost, took a shower, double and triple checked the bag.
The bf loaded up the bike, and we were on the road at 5am. Arrived at 5:15 and got a primo parking spot. It was still dark when I got bodymarked, picked up my chip, and headed toward transition.
I racked my bike and set up my transition space. Then I checked it again. Then I reorganized it.
Event warmup:

None. Except rechecking my transition setup. Lined up at 6:20, special olympics athletes got in the water about 6:35, and I myself hit the water about 7:10. I hate that part. The waiting.

This was such a mess. Pool swims are chaotic, but this was such a nightmare. The girl in front of my was backstroking, and every time I tapped her feet to pass she would stand up and start running. Another girl kept trying to pass and kicking my with her breaststroke in the chest. Then she wouldn't pass. So frustrating. I spent the whole time thinking about that kind of stuff, rather than thinking about my swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train. Yeah, I barely trained for this race. Other than that, I wish I had seeded myself a bit better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s

I grabbed my flip flops at the side of the pool before I ran across the super gravelly parking lot. Smart move! Everything went pretty smooth.

It could have been worse. I'm not a strong cyclist. I was in the easiest gear on the hill and felt like I was barely moving. All the (lack) of time training on the bike really kicked my butt. Still, I was much more mentally positive than I was three years ago. I had more fun.
What would you do differently?:

Train. I'm sensing a theme.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s

I drank some Gatorade, traded bike shoes and helmet for running shoes and hat, and grabbed my race belt on the way towards the run start. I biked barefoot and ran with socks on, and they went on pretty easy. My feet were still a bit wet, but it wasn't a problem.
What would you do differently?:

Not sit down on the curb to manage my shoes. I was having problems with my floppy shoes and Yankz making it tough to get the shoes on.
  • 37m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 05s  min/mile

Ouch. Such a huge ouch. This is where I lost all my time. I probably ran about .25 miles then had to switch to 1 minute run 1 minute walk for the rest of the leg. I ran it in, but other than that it was agony. I didn't train and this is where it finally killed me.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Wheezing and panting against a tree.
I ate half a banana, an orange segment, and a quarter a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Yum!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't train. I have motivation issues, and issues with failure or success or some kind of combination of the two. In the past I have given up on training in the weeks prior to an event, only to lose fitness and have a poor race. I don't know why I do it. But I do need to figure it out.

Event comments:

This is a very well run race that is lots of fun. It is terribly expensive for a sprint ($100!) The hoodie is a nice bit of swag, but not something I'll wear anytime soon what with the weather.
