Run
Comments: First ever multi-sport race. Was surprised at my pace for the first 5k, much faster than anticipated. What would you do differently?: Pick someone running slightly faster than me and try to keep up. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't practice this transition enough so had trouble going from running shoes to bike shoes. Also paused for Goo because race organizers asked us not to drop empty packets during the race. What would you do differently?: Work on changing shoes. Doubt pedaling on shoes would work for this race because of climb right out of transition area. Bike
Comments: Race billed as 5k - 30k - 5K. Bike course is 21 miles, not 18.6. Was told there were two significant climbs, but not that the toughest started right out of transition. What would you do differently?: Improve conditioning to get more consistent effort for bike leg. Transition 2
Comments: Feet went numb during bike leg. Hasn't happened to me before. Didn't realize until I got off bike to run into transition. When I attempted shoe change I fell over because feet had no feeling. What would you do differently?: Need to check seat height and position as well as strap tightness to prevent foot numbness during ride. Run
Comments: Numb feet and tight right hamstring significantly affected leg turnover out of transition. As run progressed hamstring loosened and sensation returned to feet. What would you do differently?: Need to work on pushing myself when fatigued. HR told me I could have done second 5k much faster. Post race
Warm down: Stretching. Mild hypothermia from not getting out of sweat-drenched clothng faster. What limited your ability to perform faster: I was very pleased with time for first 5K and bike. Second 5k only disappointing in that HR shows I could have done better. Transitions were awful, so definitely need more planning and practice. Everything else in conditioning and mental toughness. Was surprised to finish 2nd in male over-40 first time racers. Event comments: No signs at entrance to park indicating race. Even at a fork in the park road there was no sign showing racers where to go for event parking. And despite detailed race sign-up people were mis-assigned. Friend who signed up as a Clydesdale was put in age group. I signed up as first-time racer and had to correct that just before race start. These issues were important since individual time did not start on crossing first timing strip. My Clydesdale friend finished second in his class, but was not recognized because his age group started 2nd wave rather than 4th, so his finish time was miscalculated.
