Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6am, shower, had a banana and left for East Coast at around 6:40am. Arrived at East Coast at 7am, collect race pack and had body marking done and set up my stuff at transition area. Took 1/2 bottle of Accelerate.
Event warmup:

Had a brief walk and run to the toilet about 1.5km away and back. Swim to warm up just before the race.
Swim
  • 53m 6s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

The lane was set up on the left side of the swim, thus the whole swimming leg was quite messy. Most of the time, I was trying to oriented after swimming a few stroke. I didn't want to get off course too much. Everyone got jammed up at the first bouy. From 1st to 2nd bouy, I was going a bit off course from the lane marking. But managed to get back on course. Got bitten by jellyfish a few times. Felt abrasion on my crotch while doing breast stroke to orientate.

After the 2nd bouy, during the U-turn back to the shore, I was swimming quite a distance away from the lane marker. Tried to get back to the lane and stop trying to follow those people on my right as I thought they were not a good guide especially if they themselves are going off course. Then tried to focus on my swimming technique. Managed to swim until I touched the sand before I get up to run to the transition area. Felt slightly tense on the right calves, on the verge of cramping but managed to continue running.
What would you do differently?:

Should learn to breath more on the right side. Not to use people on my right as a guide when the lane guide is on the left. They are not a good indicator of the direction. Half way through the swim, I remember that I did not start the stop watch. Another fault that could have been avoided.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Was disoriented about the location of my transition area. Went round searching for it. Managed to put on shoe and race bib and grab the Powergel and T-shirt and start running.
What would you do differently?:

Orientate and familiarise myself of the location of transition before the race.
Run
  • 55m 57s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 36s  min/km
Comments:

Started slow for the first 5km. From the 6km to 8.5km, managed to get someone to pace the run with me. It was consistently faster than the first 6km. The weather was cloudy so it was easy to run. When I saw the 9km mark, I start to open up my stride and sprint to the finishing line.
What would you do differently?:

Start to pick up speed after 4km rather than wait till 6km.
Post race
Warm down:

Did some stretching, had a cup of water immediately after I cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Not enough transition training.
2. Should have more open water swim.

Event comments:

On the whole, I feel that the race could have been better if the swim was from the left side of the lane marker. Somehow, the mood is not that great at the race. Not sure if the weather was the factor. Or possibly I didn't do as well as I should for this race.
