Swim
Comments: I felt calm at the start. My group was 24 strong. As we began, most (22) pulled away quickly. I was pretty much alone for the swim. About half-way through the course I got a little panicky. I was breathing rapidly and it was a very odd feeling watching everyone swimming away from me. I thought, momentarily, that I didn't have enough strength to finish this leg of the race. After a short break treading water, I just started swimming again, trying my best to control my breathing. I settled into a pretty good pace after that but my form was a mess. My only thought was reaching shore...I was swimming slowly but steadily. As I neared the end of the course I started feeling much better and enjoyed the last few minutes of the swim. What would you do differently?: Spend more time training for the swim. Lose some more weight so my shorty wet-suit doesn't feel so tight. Transition 1
Comments: I was pretty dizzy coming out of the water and we had to run up a couple of flights of wooden stairs to get to transition. I sat down to put on my bike shoes because, honestly, I needed to get my head out of swim mode. Jogged out to the mount line and sped off on the bike. What would you do differently?: Learn to leave my shoes clipped in to my bike for the transition. Overall, I felt pretty good about my performance. Bike
Comments: I really enjoyed the bike leg of this race. Yes, the roads were in rough shape, but I didn't have too much difficulty navigating the pot holes and pavement cracks. I felt really strong on the bulk of the ride and hydrated well. Blasted down the last hill on the course, smiling as I hit 37 mph...just being a kid again, pedaling my butt off. What fun! What would you do differently?: Perhaps buy a TT bike next year? Oh, and lose some weight. :) Transition 2
Comments: Ran the bike into transition, helmet off, running shoes on and off I went. What would you do differently?: Learn to get out of bike shoes while riding into the dismount area, leaving them clipped into the pedals. Run
Comments: This was a tough run for me! I had expended a lot of energy on the swim and bike, and was feeling pretty pooped starting the run. I was quite hungry, as well. I had a gel with me (thanks for that tip, JC) and ate that as I ran. I took a little water at each station and poured some on my head...by this time it was not raining and the sun was poking out, making it very humid. On a positive note, I did not feel any pain from my shins or hips. My quads and calves were beat, and hurt for the majority of the run. Slow but steady finishes the race! It was great to get a boost from the BC Tri Club water station folks (you rock) and from my brother who gave me a pat on the back as he flew by (speedy guy). I finished the race running, which was fantastic...and the fans at the finish line were amazing! Lots of cheers for everyone. What would you do differently?: Run more, lose more weight. Post race
Warm down: Ice down the shirt...I was beat! Chatted with JC and others at the finish. Walked around to cool down. I really left everything on the course. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weight, weight, weight. Can't be said enough. Swim more, and run more. Event comments: Fantastic post-race food. Overall very well organized but take my opinion with a grain of salt...this was my first triathlon! Last updated: 2010-05-06 12:00 AM

Awake at 4:30 am in the camper to the sounds of rain. Lots of rain. Hard rain. Check the weather radar to find a giant blob of orange and green sitting over central New York state. I broke out the bagels and made coffee for my brother and I. We checked our gear, unplugged the Shasta, and headed for the race. We arrived early at transition which was very helpful. It was still raining but the crowds had not arrived yet. We set up transition and headed back to the camper to get dressed.
JC and I wandered down to the lake to check out the swim area. Water was a very pleasant 70 degrees! We swam in the lake for a few minutes before a safety person kicked us out. Oops! No swimming in the lake before the race. A little light stretching and it was time to watch JC go. My wave didn't leave for another hour, so I spent some time with the BC Tri club members.
