Pre-race routine:

Woke up late at 5:00. According to my wife, I got out of bed at 4:15, turned off both alarms, and laid back down. I don't remember any of that! Luckily she got me out of bed when she did. This was the first triathlon I've done where I didn't wake up every hour and look at the clock. The anticipation just wasn't there like normal.Loaded the kiddos. Had some fruit and Hammer Perpetum drink for breakfast on the road. Made it to the transition area just as the pre-race meeting was starting. Set up my area and checked water temp. Did a quick walk through of the bike and run exits. Met back up with Julie to pass off extra gear around 7:15. Then off the the bathroom.
Event warmup:

Jogged the 1500 meters to the swim start for my warm up. Long lines at the porta johns meant I was running pretty late for the swim start. I was hoping to be there to see the elites start, but I was about 200 away when they started. Got my wetsuit on and took a quick dip in the warm up area before lining up for the start.

Through the entire swim I found myself drifting from side to side in the canal. I wasn't to worried going in about navigation because we were in the canal. That turned out to be a mistake, I should have sighted more to avoid swiming extra distance by drifting from side to side. My wife even commented on how much I was drifting off line. Sorry to anybody I drifted into. I was pretty pleased with my swim time thoug. PR pace for any distance outside of a pool.

What would you do differently?:

sight more consistently.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s

The worst transition I've had yet. I just was not on my game. Started with getting my wet suit off. My bike rack was quite close to the swim finish, so I was at my bike before I had a chance to pull my arms out of my wet suit. Then the suit stuck on my wrists, and on my ankles. I almost fell over trying to get out of the thing. Once I finally got out of the suit took me forever to get my helmet buckled. Once once I got the helmet on, the run to the bike exit was uneventful. I had to navigate around 2 athletes that stopped right after the timing mats to mount. Jumped on the bike, no prob. Then the rubber band holding my left shoe snapped before I could get my foot on it. shoe flipped down, jambed into the ground and I about went over the bars. Had to get of the bike remove the shoe, put it on my foot and remount the bike. In the mean time those guys who mounted back at the timing mats went flying by, no doubt laughing at me. As they should have. Once I finally got. Like I said, worst transition I've had.
What would you do differently?:

Invest in some new rubber bands!! I've thrown out the pack that has been sitting around the house for who knows how long and are now mostly dry-rotted. Body glide the inside of the wet suit along with my ankles and wrists.

I felt very sluggish for the 1st several miles of the ride. I was actually wondering if I had lost air in my tires, because I just couldn't seem to get the bike going. Then we hit a patch of smoother road, and I realized that the road was just really rough. My GPS showed a 1mph slower average pace than the race results, I'm wondering if the course was short?
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I was pretty happy with my ride overall.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s

As with T1, I just wasn't on my game today. My focus wasn't there so I made some dumb mistakes. I ran right past my rack spot, and had to stop and get my bearings. Ended up running to the end of the racks to check the numbers so that I could find my rack. Of course, this was the first time I'd ever racked onto an empty rack in T2! Once I found my rack spot things went pretty well. Did spend more time getting my shoes on, since I decided to go back to socks, and non-elastic laces. Costs some seconds in T2 but I think it's worth the improved comfort on the run. The last mistake I made of the day happened as I was leaving T2, went out the bike exit! Then had to turn around and go back out the run. I was paying to much attention to my watch, and should have been looking at the signs.
What would you do differently?:

Do a better job during warm up walk through of my transitions. Count racks, look for my shoes on the ground. Brightly colored transition towel. I'm thinking hot pink would be hard to miss! LOL

I pretty much rocked the run. Was passing sprint athletes, who were only doing 1 loop for pretty much the whole first loop. Was only passed one time on the run, and that was a sprint athlete, at the end of my first loop.
12 minute improvement over last year's Tri Indy run split! Like I said, rocked it!
What would you do differently?:

Can't really think of anything. No complaints about the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with the family. I was not nearly as tired as I remeber being after last year's race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I made a lot of mistakes in transitions. I think that pretty much was due to waking up late and arriving at the race venue 30mins later than I had planned. I was rushed setting up my transition area, and I didn't take the time I should have to walk through the transition process, and mentally visualize my transitions.

Event comments:

I think the main improvement Tri Indy could make would be to improve the bike course. They should consider re-routing the olympic to a single loop course, and try to get on some better roads.
