Swim
Comments: I've only done 1 other olympic distance swim and this was a 10 minute improvement. But I am still slow relative to my bike and run. I felt very relaxed in this swim and swam relatively straight. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Early in the bike, it felt like it took a while for my legs to wake up. Not until the Mclelland Rd. climb did they start to feel strong. Unfortunately soon after reaching the top of Cabrillo I hit a pot hole and blew out the rear tire. I had a bear of a time reinstalling the tire and actually broke a plasctic tire iron. The fix took 13 minutes way too long. Rode one mile and felt the rear wheel rubbing on the frame. Now here is the big mistake- instead of checking why the wheel was rubbing I just slid the whhel back further in the drop out until it didn't rub. I was able to back it back down hill but shortly after the 2nd loop bike split my rear wheel was rubbing again. I slowed down to stop and BAM! the rear tire blew out and mentally I was done. I starting walking back to T2 without doing the 2nd loop. Realizing I was still about 4-5 miles away I rode back on the flat tire. (Dumb move number 2 or 3 that day). DNF What would you do differently?: I should of tried to repair the first blown tube and tried to finish the whole bike course. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Considering I had fresh legs by not completeing the bike I was able to run a 10K PR (Tri or stand-alone). Although, I have not really done that many 10Ks. Post race
Event comments: This was really a great race from the course, logistics, swag to organization. Definitely would recommend it for others to do. I was really torn about weather or not I should have even done the run portion after DNFing the bike. I realize that by doing the run I might affect others in my AG who might run differently based me being there. I didn't think about it at the time but accepting a medal at the end is direspectful to others who an Olympic distance is a huge accomplishment. I emailed the organized and told them to DNF me because I had not completed the bike course. Last updated: 2010-08-01 12:00 AM
