Swim
Comments: with the start, felt a cramp in my calf starting as soon as I hit the water, didn't want that to happen, just focused on staying relaxed and navigating toward each buoy, it was one of the toughest and waviest swims I've done in a triathlon since it was also against the current, waves were 3 ft, What would you do differently?: not much, focused on not using any energy in my legs and staying relaxed through the waves Transition 1
Comments: As soon as I stood up, felt cramps starting in both calves which is a problem, therefore I walked a good ways out of the water, then started to shuffle through the sand, cramps stayed at bay What would you do differently?: not sure if it was hydration or nutrition or if I tapered too much or did too much the week prior to cause the cramps, just one of those days Bike
Comments: worried about cramps in calves getting worse, so focused on easy gears and high cadence, felt the start of a cramp on the steepest hill, but went away when I got to the top, felt better during the last half than the first half What would you do differently?: not sure I should have gone much harder, I didn't really get passed by anyone, and was worried about cramps getting worse and dreading what would happen on the run given how my legs felt Transition 2
Comments: Once I got off the bike and started to run in my bike shoes, my legs felt basically OK, cramps in calves didn't materialize, took my time in transition What would you do differently?: not much Run
Comments: first mile felt good, was worried about legs cramping so I knew I wouldn't be able to run a goal pace of low 7's per mile, so I tried to stay relaxed, after about mile 2, my quads started to get tight and cramp pretty bad, so I started walking the water stations and gradually slowing down, they felt a little better, but hurt after every hill, and hurt pretty bad at the end What would you do differently?: again, not sure the cause of the cramping, poor training race week, poor nutrition the night before (due to the party), but the run was disappointing, about 5 mins slower than my last race Post race
Warm down: walked about 100 yards and poured a bottle of water over my head What limited your ability to perform faster: quad cramping during the run Event comments: A little disappointing due to leg cramping which hasn't happened to me in awhile, due to the competition, not sure I would have medaled even if I would have run my best race, overall, given the situation, glad I was able to salvage a decent outcome by going slower than normal on the run, swim was challenging due to waves/current, bike was challenging due to the hills, Last updated: 2010-08-08 12:00 AM

Age Group Rank = 5/10
woke up 5 am after not a great night sleep, due to party night before, bowl of cereal, banana, Cuban instead of regular coffee, power bar at the race site, haven't felt right all week, too bad since I viewed this as a key race
arrived a little late, had to correct age group at registration, didn't have time to run or swim much, had to walk a mile down the beach to the swim start
