Swim
Comments: My swim started off pretty good and I was making pretty good time but I'm just not strong enough. I lost an ear plug so water got in my ear. I ended up bobbing quite a bit while sighting and never got my stroke working. I quickly tired and resorted to the "save my ass from drowning" stroke, a.k.a. breast stroke. I rounded the bouys pretty good but I could never get my storke going. What would you do differently?: MORE OPEN WATER SWIMMING Transition 1
Comments: My transition went pretty good. All of my gear was properly layed out. I didn't have any problems taking off my wet suit so everything seemed to go smoothly. What would you do differently?: At first I worried about where to toss my wet suit. I need to think about that before the race and plan accordingly. Bike
Comments: I averaged about 18 - 21 miles an hour for the entire 12 miles.` What would you do differently?: More training on the bike. Leg strength came into play here. At the end of the ride my legs were cramping a bit. I guess that means I didn't drink enough even though I didn't feel dehydrated. Transition 2
Comments: My transition went fairly smooth. I dismounted in the assigned area and started running with my bike but was slowed by some calf cramping. Racking the bike went well, removing the riding shoes went well. I forgot to take off my helmet so I had to return and leave that. What would you do differently?: I must have been distracted by something because I forgot to take off my helmet BEFORE taking off for the run. Run
Comments: Immidiately after transition my calves started to cramp up dispite the water and endurance drink I had on the bike. I guess I was pushing hard on the bike. During the run I held a pretty good pace until the 2 mile mark. At that point my energy level dropped and I started to fade. A couple of runners passed me and all I could do was watch them go. What would you do differently?: Fuel up better Post race
Warm down: I walked around and then ate bananas and a bagle with peanut butter. What limited your ability to perform faster: proper nutrition Event comments: This wasn't my best performance I'd ever done but it was good enough for 3rd place in my A.G. I was really surprised when my name was read because I didn't think I was going that fast. See! It does pay to push all the way through the finish line! 3rd Place! Yipee! I got up around 3:45 to thunder and lightning. Were we going to race was all that went through my mind. I ate a lite breakfast and some water, loaded my gear into the Pathfinder and hit the road by 5:05. I arrived at the race course around 6 am, picked up my packet and proceeded to get body marked. The race directors thought about calling the race around 6:45 but the weather cleared up and everything was good to go. I did my normal routine of checking my tire pressure, laying out my transition area and getting my wet suit.
For my warm-up I did some light jogging between the transition area and my car because I kept forgetting this or that. Duh! I probably would have forgotten my head if it weren't attached.
