Swim
Comments: Only spent a few minutes out of the water between warm up and wave start but was enough to chill me slightly. Water was cold at 58 degrees but was still warmer than the air (mid 40's). Took me a minute or 2 to settle into a rhythm of breathing and strokes. Not sure why but I got settled in and just kept going. Had minor goggle leakage at first, maybe that's what caused it (tightened straps and continued). Another racer's Garmin calculated course at 0.68 miles, nearly 1/4 mile farther than it was supposed to be. Made me feel lots better about my time, fastest swim time so far when I calculated it based on the correct distance. What would you do differently?: Nothing...did as well as expected, especially first time racing in a wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Felt fine coming out of the water, walked once I hit the timing mat. Pavement was rocky/gravelly and hurt my already-cold feet. Got my suit off just fine but had issues getting my socks on and shoes tied with my cold, wet hands. Felt like I was in there forever, laughing along with another AGer across from me who was having similar issues. Grabbed my helmet & bike and moved right along. 16th out of 22 in AG What would you do differently?: Not be so cold? LOL...could get lock laces and try the sockless thing to help with the useless, cold fingers issue. Bike
Comments: Felt good coming in from the swim and T1. Hopped on the bike and was prepared for the almost immediate uphill. There were some areas of rough pavement so I went slowly through them, and some tight turns that you come into right out of a downhill then took an immediate uphill so those were not my favorite parts. Loved the long downhill both times, got almost 30mph. What would you do differently?: Train hills more often. Train longer distance/time more often. Transition 2
Comments: Took what I call a flying dismount from the bike in the dismount area. Foot caught on the crossbar and I nearly ate it. Recovered nicely (and was cheered on by the crowd about how nicely I recovered) but my bike ate it. Threw the chain off and mangled part of a pedal. Nothing too bad though. Picked the bike up and ran into transition. 6th out of 22 in AG - fast T2 considering the near-calamity! What would you do differently?: Not fall off my bike. :) Run
Comments: I think I hydrated too much on the bike and at T2. I don't like to hear sloshing in my tummy while I'm running, which is unpleasant to me. Also left hip flexor was complaining a bit so I did take a few walk breaks. Felt incredibly slow this day but every time I pushed it faster my hip flexor cried out. The run was already my least favorite part of tri's but today was just not a good one for me. Ah well! Will do better next time. This was also the longest tri-related run I've done and longest tri so far so it gives me an idea of what to do to in my training, where to concentrate, etc. What would you do differently?: Not drink so much water and gatorade prior to run. Mentally toughen up for the run portion of the tri since I know I don't like it much. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a few minutes, stretched, hydrated and had half a banana. What limited your ability to perform faster: Experience...training slacked off in the 2 weeks prior to the event due to family obligations, holiday events, work, time change, etc. Last updated: 2010-11-06 12:00 AM

Woke up early. Ate a banana, drank water. Had 2 Clif Shot Bloks. Cold cold cold weather! Snow on nearby mountains. Overnight temps had dipped into the 30's. Everyone was bundled up.
Arrived later than anticipated and parked almost a mile away. The walk to the event location counted as part of my warm-up. Put my wetsuit on and went into the water which was quite warmer than the air, swam around for a few minutes then just chilled there until a few min before my wave since it felt nice.
