Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 am. Made the coffee and ate breakfast. Woke the family up and they drove me to the race site. They dropped me off. I went in and set up my transition area. I then went and got my chip and had them body mark me. Water was super foggy and you could not see the swim markers in the water. I went back to t1 to fiddle around some more. Applied my sunscreen and it ended up making the body marking run, so I had to go back and get them to redo it. As it started getting closer to race time, they made an announcement that they were delaying the start to see if the fog would lift. After several delays, they finally made the decision to cancel the swim. I was so bummed. I picked White Lake for the swim. They said it would not be a chip start, bike/run. Everyone went into transition to get out of wetsuits. Some people started putting helmets, glasses and shoes on. A volunteer told people they could not do that, so they took it off and we all started heading to the water for the run into transition. The official then makes an announcement that you can start with your helmet and shoes. So everyone goes back and puts their helmet and shoes on. I did too. I did not want my t1 time to be longer than everyone else. So we go to the water and we are about to start the race. All of a sudden the sun comes out and the fog clears. You can see everything on the water. All of the people start chanting swim, swim. The race director gets everyone quiet and then asks if the lifeguards are good, they say yes. Cheers all around, then the director says he has to talk to one more person, he tries to call safety people on the phone. They left the race and he can't get ahold of them. So even though the water was perfectly good with not fog, we could not swim...crapola.
Event warmup:

Other than the back and forth to the transition area, nothing.

No swim......it was cancelled
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

On a side note. By the time the race was finally getting underway, I was so hungry. Oh, oh....not a way to start a long race. Already hungry, so meaning already in a deficite...crapola again.
Bike/run it is. We line up by waves and one by one go over the timing mat to run into t1. I was the first to go over for my wave #5. I ran into t1 and only had to grab my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Be more prepared food wise for the what ifs....
Bike
  • 2h 54m 28s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.26 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to do the bike in under 3 hrs. which would be a 18mph avg at least. The roads were clustered due to the way we started. It was windy. Or it seemed so to be. I took one gel an hour and one sip of my infinite electrolite/protein dink every 15 minutes. I had to potty after the 1st 20 miles, but did not stop. The expansion cracks on the road drove me crazy there were like 15 miles or more of it.
With a couple of miles to go, I passed the kids waiting on top of the van to cheer me on. Just what I needed. My support crew.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I pushed to the top of my limits.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Got off the bike and ran into T2. Put the visor, shoes, water belt on and was off. My time for t2 was 1:51. I put the water belt on twisted and had to take it off while running. Ended up dropping it and had to pick it up and keep running.
What would you do differently?:

Not drop the water belt or put it on all twisted.
Run
  • 2h 16m 42s
  • 13.1 miles

Comments:

At this point I still had to pee very badly. From the get go, my right foot started hurting. Almost like it had a lot of pressure on it. I kept running. I finally found a patch of woods a little after the first mile that did not have cars parked, so I ducked in, threw my water belt on the ground. Had to pull the one piece all the way down and finally pottied. Zipped back up, water belt on, then ran out of the woods. It was a little hot. Right foot started bothering me again right away. My pace at this point was a little slower than I wanted. I think I was starting to suffer from the fact that I started the race out already hungry.
At the 4.5 mile marker my foot was hurting so bad that I was sure I had this nasty blister or something. I had to stop on the curb and take my shoe and sock off. some grass was in my sock. I thought maybe that was rubbing and causing the pain/pressure. Put it back on and off I went. I was good until the 5.5 mile marker. I started really getting hungry and my foot really started hurting again. It was at this time that I made the decision to take the run a lot easier than I had planned. I did not want this race to end badly, we all know it has happened( passed out after finishing a half mary and ended up getting an ambulance trip to ER) . So I told my self to relax a little, slow down some and FINISH. I was hungry, hot and my foot hurt.
I made it to the turnaround point at 6.55 miles in 1:02 (9:33 avg). Not too bad, not too great either. The run has no shade whatsoever on it. I love running in the cold, and not the hot so much. There were aide stations at every mile. I got an ice cold towel and carried it with me to till the next one, at that point I would get a new one. There were several times where I had to fix me shoe. I think it was the socks. I had run in them before but not this distance. They were bunching up some under the ball of my foot and causing a lot of pain. There were several times were I took a minute to two minute walk breaks. With the last 2 miles to go, I finally got some wind in my sail and was able to bring my pace back down into the low 9s. I ran over a mat some distance from the finish, and they called out my name. As I was running through the finish line. My kids and hubby were right there! Knowing that they were waiting for me made all the difference. They placed my medal on Hudson's neck. He loved that.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure here. I did not feel like I went too hard on the bike at all. Make sure I have the right socks on. I also feel like I maybe needed to put in more miles for the run. I did a half mary the end of March that I did awesome in, but my coach did not have me running a lot since then. Make sure that I eat enough before the race and snack a little while waiting for race time.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked straight to the lake with my family, and I hopped in. I got some snacks, then hung out for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The socks/foot issues. I did end up getting some blisters, I never get those. I also think I needed to have been running more since my half mary.

Event comments:

Ok....Sometimes I think you gain more from the races that don't go as planned. I was so ready for the swim, and would have rocked it. Those that know me, know that that is a huge thing for me. I have come so far from that girl that when tri girls started could not swim at all. I was so ready for the bike and am very happy with my avg. I knew that the run was my strongest part and that I needed to hold on for the bike. I did that. I am a runner. I can run fast(ish). I thought I would break it out of the park with the run. Well, that did not happen, and that is ok. I think several things played into the run not going well, me starting race already hungry, the foot/sock issue. I also think that I needed to have run a little more since the shamrock. While I thought I was way prepared for the swim and bike going into the race. I did not feel that way about the run.
I loved all of the support from my family. They made this the best Mother's Day weekend ever!

I will do another....to be able to say that I actually did a half distance, and to be able to smoke the run.
