Pre-race routine:

No taper at all for this race. In fact I did a 7 mile run on Thurs prior. This was definitely treated as a "B" race.

Up at 4:15. Ate 3 homemade energy bars. Drove to Decatur from my parent's house in Huntsville - about a 45 min drive. 1 immodium the night before and 1 morning of made things manageable. The race was of course very disorganized as usual and resulted in the race starting 30 minutes late.

I ate a GU ~7:00.
Event warmup:

Dynamic stretching on the beach.

Comments:

Not a good swim. I just couldn't seem to get my rhythm. I really don't know why. Maybe the chop was messing with me, but I've definitely faced worse chop. Maybe the extreme murkiness made a difference. I literally couldn't see any part of my arm as it came through the water. It was seriously that dirty from the storms the night/day before. The time includes the run up the beach and through the park, so it's not AS bad as it looks, but it's not good either.

If I had raced AG: 4/19
What would you do differently?:

I dunno. A good warm up in the water would have been nice, but in these local races, it's usually such a small area and so many people.
Transition 1

Comments:

Smooth transition. No big issues here.

Comments:

I don't know what to say about this atrocious time except that I guess my legs just weren't in good condition after the aforementioned 7 mile run on Thurs. I kept telling myself to push harder, thinking okay I'm going, then looking down at the speedometer and seeing that I was going so much slower than I expected. It was really frustrating. I think maybe I need some bike maintenance. I'm planning on doing whatever it takes to get the bike in for some maintenance before next week's race.

I thought the first half was frustrating, then I turned around and realized I had actually been enjoying a head wind. Now I was met with a nice push in the face. I'm really rather embarrassed by this slow speed and lousy effort. The only thing I can really think is maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges since I didn't ease up for this race at all.

I took a GU toward the end of the bike segment.

If I had raced AG: 5/19
What would you do differently?:

I really wouldn't do my training any differently since I'm really focusing on my 2 "A" races this year, but it's still disappointing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

My landmark in the transition area was a bike with a flag on the back of it (among other things), and it was gone when I got back, and a different one on the row over! What are the chances! So I ran up the wrong row, and couldn't find my place!!! Rookie move. I was freaking out. Finally hubby yells "RACHAEL!!! OVER THERE!!!!" Fortunately the racks were tall enough and there was a gap close enough that I could just take the bike under the rack. I was so pissed that I threw my bike up on the rack and mashed the mess out of my finger! DANG IT!! The rest went normally, but I was really pissed coming out of T2.

AG: 5/26
OA: 46/160
If I had raced AG: 10/19
What would you do differently?:

I saw a lady with a giant pink sparkly flag marking her place in transition. Maybe I should do that! Haha! But seriously - chose non-moving landmarks!!

Comments:

Finally a good event. Funny that it was the run since I usually consider this my weakest event. But even the percentages say I was better on the run than the run than the bike (44% on the bike 37% on the run). I PR'ed this course. I felt strong. It was still pretty overcast. Still under 75 degrees. I ran and enjoyed it. Then on the last section, my final push was so hard that I grunted/yelled aloud several times with the exertion (just call me Monica Seles - haha!). Some guy got really pumped when he heard this and was like "yeah! get it girl!" Haha!!

If I had raced AG: 7/19
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I pushed hard and felt great about it.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, stretching, chilling, much later the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A hard training week prior, losing my place in T2.
