Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:15 and out of bed by 4:30. Was nice since my parents took Skylar overnight so we got out of the room pretty quick. Met up with my wifes parents in the lobby at 5am and grabbed a coffee bagel and peanutbutter from the lobby. Got to bike and pumped up tires and headed out to the start.
Event warmup:

Sat in line and had some conversations with fellow athletes. Family stayed parked on a bench on the sidewalk and I was in the lawn next to the yellow lot. Took a GU about 10 till 7am.
  • 1h 19m 25s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards

We started running down the ramp to the start and we got 20 feet before going out on the dock and we were stopped. After a few minutes Mike said that they were assisting a fellow athlete - Once we got restarted we were off the jump in was cool and I was off. Within the first 100 yards I past the dock house and I could see them giving CPR to Mark Wezca. I stopped. What seemed like 30-40 seconds but was probably only 5. It is not something you like to see anytime. I took back off and I will admit a bit slower as I had that picture in my mind.

Once we got going it was a relative uneventful swim. Was a little weirded out when the water started getting cooler and turning a little brown. Then slightly down river the taste and smell of fuel, but being from Cincinnati and a former boat owner this was nothing compared to what I have swam in the past!
What would you do differently?:

Looking at everyone elses time that I know I might have been on the slow side but giving the emotional start. I was happy to be out!
Transition 1
  • 05m 38s

Was good - took a little bit of time but knew I was ok with 5 mins.
What would you do differently?:

Pack my own spray sunscreen.
  • 6h 18m 39s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr

You know at this point I was right on my target time almost to the minute. So when I hit mile 68 I stopped to talk with the family and said that I am doing fine but will probably slow down a bit so I can run the run.I ended up keeping pace and finishing the bike at 2 minutes ahead of my goal of 6:20 but knew that I slowed down as I was getting passed like crazy coming down 42 and on river road. But that was ok with me. Saw alot of my training peeps out on the ride and rode with some of them for a few minutes. Was good to do because the second loop got a little boring!
What would you do differently?:

Even though I got a assload of miles on the bike this year - since it is really only my first year of biking I woul log a few more miles and get some better bricks in to prepare my legs for the run. But today - I came off the bike with a smile and that was all I needed.
Transition 2
  • 08m 2s

Not bad - not good. Long run/walk to changing tent
What would you do differently?:

take shoes off and run barefoot.
  • 5h 00m 25s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 28s  min/mile

Started off ok and was hitting my goals of under 10 min miles. Was withing this pace up until mile 15. Got dizzy and headache within 10 minutes was forced to stop. Went behind a port o let and dryheaved a few times and leaned down with hands on knees and side against the jon and sat there a few minutes. A volunteer came over and got me walking again. Thought to my self that it was a good go at it and walk the rest of the way in. Was even trying to find someone to txt my wife so they would know. I saw a John Book and told him I am just preserving a finish and that I was done. I walked for about a mile and stoped again. This time I took off my hat and sunglasses and....hmmm I felt much better. I guess the tightness of the sunglasses and hat had gotten to me and the releif of them coming off was amazing. Walked about another mile or so and then decided to run. Took it easy for a while but was fine the rest of the way in.
What would you do differently?:

Dont wear new sunglasses the day of the race!
Post race
Warm down:

Felt pretty good - talked with family had a water then went down to the CC and had a slice of pizza. Went back to the finish line and watched the finishers till about 11:30. Had a beer and thought my eyes had weights on them so headed back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing - it was a picture perfect 137.6 - had a 3 mile challenge during the run but that was all!

Event comments:

Well - it was 364 days from my first tri to ironman - what a year! Also 2011 was my first olympic/half/full distance. I will say that I was happy with my time and race in Lousiville since I had no issues after the race and actually have been out on a run since the race and plan on a long run tomorrow. All the soreness was gone in 24 hours and was pretty much back to normal by tuesday morning.
Where to go from here?
I am not sure what path I am going to take from here. Do I do another full or stick with some shorter races. Baby #2 will be here in Feb and that wil definitly put a time limit on training. I will say that I have met more people in the past year than the past 5 years combined. This sport has lead me on a transformation that has been needed - I dont want it to end but I also have a wife, 2 year old and one on the way that need my time.

So maybe I run and get a few marathons in next year then in 2013 return to the full distance??? What ever happens I will keep my logs here and keep checking on some of my friends as tri's and racing is definitly in my blood!

Great seeing everybody at the race and I am sure I will meet more in the future!

On the run...
