Run
Comments: Before the start, something clicked in my mind. I was not 100%, but I made a decision that I was going to run as hard as a I could, and that I was going to welcome pain. When the gun went off, I was flying out of the start line. I got way too excited. I checked my Garmin and I was running a 5:00. I immediately pulled back a little bit. I was averaging a 7:26 for the first 4 miles. When mile 5 hit, I started to get side cramps. I knew that I did not hydrate myself well during the week, so I drank some water at every aid station. I also took a Gu and started to squeez my side hoping that it would go away. I endured the pain for the next few miles and I tried to keep the pace under a 7:30. There was an "Ironman Guy" with a bright green shirt that I was pacing who started to fade at mile 8. I needed to find another pacer and sure enough, I found another Ironman guy. We kept switching off, he was in the lead and then I was and vice versa. He kept grunting like Tim Allen from "Home Improvement" to keep himself going (do whatever keeps you going bro). I reached mile 12 and I realized that I have never ran this distance this fast before. Given the circumstances, I was pretty happy. But that joy quickly came to a grimacing pain as my legs were starting to give and my piriformis starting to act up again. I remembered what told myself from the start, "welcome the pain" and I just put my head down and ran as fast as I could. I crossed the finish line and it felt great that another pr was in the books. Mile 1- 7:23 mile 2- 7"30 mile 3 - 7:26 mile 4 - 7:34 mile 5 - 7:23 mile 6 - 7:31 mile 7 - 7:28 mile 8 - 7:24 mile 9 - 7:22 mile 10 - 7:31 mile 11 - 7:37 mile 12 - 7:34 mile 13 - 7:35 mile .1 - 6:58 What would you do differently?: Hydrate better. Take a better look at the course. My garmin seems to always say I'm running further than what's actually said on the course. Post race
Warm down: Ate some bananas, saw a buddy of mine waiting for me who finished with a 1:25. Gave a hug to the gf and made my way back to home and then church. What limited your ability to perform faster: Piriformis was an issue. Better run fitness. I would really like to get down to a 1:30 especially if I want to qualify for Boston. I do feel however, that a lot of it is more of a mind discipline above anything else. As Ice Cube would say "Today was a Good Day" Last updated: 2011-01-25 12:00 AM

The week leading up to the race, I was actually pretty nervous because my piriformis was achy and hurt. I had trouble walking and let alone, running, so I took it easy for the week. I was using the tp roller the whole week on the glutes and the piriformis. Spent about an hour on Saturday just roling it out. Picked up my packet on Saturday morning right before basketball practice. Had lunch at Stonefire grill and for dinner, had the left overs.
I woke up at 5:45 on race morning. Good thing about this race is that it is so close to where I live so I could get a few extra minutes of sleep. Ate a cliff bar, drank some water and drove over to HB. The goal for the race was anything under 1:40.
Walked about a half mile to the start line from where I parked. Jogged up and down from the start line to the back.
