Swim
Comments: Little slow but not bad. I noticed that you could see a few feet in the 81 degree water and that made me relax alot! only being my 5th ows I was a bit nervouse the day prior to the race when we walked down to the beach and saw the markers in the water - wow - basically swim to the other side and back! I noticed that if I just keep my head down and breath every other stoke I acutally feel better and more relaxed....coming back in wasn't as bad as previous waves since sun was up a little higher by now! What would you do differently?: try drafing? Someone was on my heels the whole way back in and kept hitting my ankles and feet almost stopped to let them by... Not wear the timing chip so tight - think it was cutting the blood off and causing a slight cramp in my foot the last 3-400 Transition 1
Comments: Lovely run up hill to the transition - it was carpeted but rocks under thin carpeting still hurt. What would you do differently?: nothing - all good! Bike
Comments: Well - 2nd race on the new bike and starting in the last wave I know we were going to have to pass alot. I was flying the first 3/4 of the race. Fast uphill- fast down hill -fast when I past the pig farm that smelled like poo! I seemed to even be going fast when not in areo! But had to consistentily look back to make sure path is clear as there was only a few times I rode the white line. Most of the time was in the middle or out in the divider. Got caught in a dust strom made by a local cutting grass and got a mouthfull of dust - had to rinse my eyes out also. Thanks dude! Notice that my time was going to be way ahead of what I was aiming for so last 6 miles sat up and drank a bottle of water and had some GU and powerblocks. Even with riding the last 6 probably about 17mph came in at 21 mph. Thought that my day might be over but surprisingly flying dismount and ran with the bike thru transistion! What would you do differently?: Due to heat and wind maybe dial it down a little for a better more comfortable run! Seemed to work a little harder weaving in and out all the time. Transition 2
Comments: Zoots went on great and I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Well - my first big race and I was off on the run - started out very strong and think I even did a sub 8. I am amazed on the run. I have never seen so many people walking. I guess I am used to sprints and to see this....I wanted to ask everyone if they were ok - but there was just too many. I wasn't ready for that. Mentally to see people who look like great athletes walking was new to me and was a challenge to overcome - if they are walking - I can walk ? But when the wheels feel off - I walked the aid stations and ran inbetween. Some fast and some not so fast. Mile 7 aid staion was great but took in way too much - had too much in my stomach for the next couple of miles. Managed to get my legs back under me at mile 9 and picked up the pace a bit. Too bad some one turned the breeze off at this time and it started to bake outside! What would you do differently?: Plan to start slower and try to pick it up earlier vs buring everything in the first 2-3 miles. Post race
Warm down: Frozen strawberry yogurt! and a water. got back in the water for a bit. Had a couple bites of pizza and enjoy the atmosphere What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat Event comments: This being my first Ironman brand event - they do a great job. This being my first HIM - great to hear the stories of pople and their journey to this point. There are some very inspiring people out there on this journy to IM with me/us! Volunteers are awesome! Made sure I gave a thumbs up or a thank you whenever I could - especially at the last or second to last stop with the garden hose spray! Now onto IMKY - Got a 6 mile run in this morning and will be back on track without missing a beat. I did see some of the BT folks out there and I am sorry that I didnt introduce myself - but my biggest and only on this day supporter - my wife - was a trooper and a half and I wanted to be with her and we enjoyed hanging out together 2 days after our 10 year anniversary! She has made just as big of a committment to IM as I have due to my absence from the house the past 6 months and has done wonderful with our daughter skylar. I appreciate everything she does! And as you can see below me and the dog got a little cat nap once I got home! Last updated: 2011-03-05 12:00 AM

For starters this year is a big race year for me. 1st Olympic - 1st HIM and 1st IM
2 down - 1 to go (IMKY)
Stayed in Muncie the night before and had alam set for 4:30 but was pretty much up at 4. Packed the car and grabbed a bite at the hotel and left about 5:15
Being 36 with the last name of Waldeck put me in the last wave :55 minutes behind the pros. That was odd. All my other tri - all 3 of them- I start in the front so mentally it was tough to basically hangout for 40-50 minutes watching others go in the water. Good thing is the line for the porta pottie was very short so I got one last pottie break in 10 minutes prior to race. Kissed the wife and headed in!
