Swim
Comments: I was really depressed that they shortened the swim. I could have used the extra time on the field. I guess they could not make the swim long enough for me to keep a lead on the cyclers. It would have helped to have the extra 500 meters. First time I ever drafted and I'm not sure it worked for me. I never really got in a groove or felt relaxed. Ended up going his pace and was more disoriented than ever. I suppose it was because I was relying on him and not myself. My swim condition was very good. Andy Potts did the swim in 10:21 and came in second. He was in the lead and over shot the landing. What would you do differently?: Forget the drafting and do my own thing or practice drafting some how. Transition 1
Comments: Long run from beach to TI. It was probably about a quarter mile. Passed a lot of people. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Did really well for me. It never ceases to amaze me how fast people can ride. Tried really hard to take advantage of the wind when I had it. I never saw anyone drafting probably because there were a lot of officials riding the course. A long with several 45-49 calves that passed me I noticed a lot of MDot tattoos as well. With the first wave of my age division starting before me I was always hopeful that it was that group doing most of the passing as I caught several of them on the swim and run to transition. What would you do differently?: Wish I knew what to do differently. I really need to find a way to push myself harder when training. I just do not have the power to go faster. Transition 2
Comments: A little crowded thus dodging folks while running with the bike is a sport in itself. Run
Comments: Felt really good. Should have run a little faster but I was afraid of blowing up. Since my wave did not start until 9:05 a.m I think I really allowed it to get in my head that it was going to be a hot run. Did not really push until mile 4 and realized I had too much left. Happy with the negative splitting on the two halves but still feel I left a little out there. There were plenty of stations with water and Gatorade. You had the chance to get multiple waters if you wanted which was very nice. What would you do differently?: Trust how I felt. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I am a clydesdale and clydesdales have limits. Event comments: The race was amazing all around. Seldom do you get to participate in something with very few if any flaws. Post race activities were impressive, complete with shade and plenty of food. Getting to see all the pros was a highlight as well. Cold towels and a finishers medal at the end. Plethora of drink options at the end as well. Can't imagine a better race. Had to have transition set up by 6:45a.m. My wave did not start until 9:00a.m. so there was no real routine. Hurry up and wait. If anything I over hydrated with the long wait.
Swam a little.
