Pre-race routine:

Got up early, quietly left hotel as not to wake up the kids and wife. Made it to pre-race set-up early and was able to set up my transition area. Since this was my first race, I had the jitters and wanted to make sure I had plenty of time. I ate a banana and drank some gatorade, not much else for nutrition. The night before I ate a big pasta dinner so I felt good nutrition wise!
Event warmup:

Just some strecthing, but mainly the nerves kept me loose!
Swim
  • 10m 10s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since this was in the pool, the start times had to be staggered as there were far more then 25 people swimming! Basically I waited in line for about 30 minutes before I was able to finally get in the pool. I crossed the mat and jogged to the first person with their arm up. I dove in, excitedly of course and off came my goggles as soon as I hit the water! Took me a few second to get them back on and start my swim. I started strong, the realized I had better slow it down a little or I would have nothing left for the rest of the event! Once I got into my pace I only had a few laps left so I pushed it a little harder. I was happy with my swim time overall!
What would you do differently?:

Work on my entry into the pool and focus on my pace in the beginning instead of going all out!
Transition 1

Comments:

Way too much time wasted here. I'll chalk it up to my first Tri and not wanting to run in spandex. I grabbed my towel and dried off, then had to dig through my bag to find everything. I placed what I needed on top, but in my excitement it all fall off to the side! I removed my trunks with my bike shorts underneath(left those on) and slipped on a pair of running shorts. I also felt I had to put my compression socks on, which isn't easy with wet legs! I also put on a long sleeve compression shirt, which isn't easy with a wet body either! Then I placed my short sleeve short on with race number. Grabbed my helmet and bike gloves then headed to the start area. Took my about 10 second to get on my bike and get going. I wanted to grab a gel to eat on the second leg of the bike course but forget to get it. Was a little bummed but I did have my gatorade which helped!
What would you do differently?:

Need to forget all the extra clothes and be much faster here. Overall winner in my age group did it in 1:06!

Comments:

This was clearly my weak spot. With the age group winner at 28:14, I certainly need to push myself harder on the bike. I have begun to train harder on my bike recently in hopes of shaving some time off my bike for the next tri in September. I am hoping to get at least 7 minutes, but preferably 10 minutes off my time by September!
What would you do differently?:

Need to push harder and pedal more often! I took my time and coasted down the hills instead of pedaling. I was passed alot in this segment and it was embarassing to say the least! I cant just go out for a sunday ride, I need to push it and realize that I am in a race!
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

My transition was better here as I didn't have much to do but get my bike racked and take off my helmet, then get my shoes and hat on. I did remember to grab a gel which mentally helped me. Not sure it did much physically, actually I had diarrhea the rest of the day which I think was from the gel.
What would you do differently?:

I was fairly happy here. Maybe just pick up the pace better. I was 18th in my age group, the best time was :42 so I have some work to do again.

Comments:

This was my strength of the race for sure by the 9th ranking in my group and 77th ranking overall. It wasn't easy to start but thankfully I had practiced this transition a few times before in my brick training. Once I gobbled up my gel and get my legs underneath me, I really began to push myself. It felt good passing people(sorry but I definitely made me run harder!) instead of being passed like the bike and that motivated me to run harder. I found someone a little ways ahead of me running a good pace and told myself I would catch him before the race ended. I didn't quite get to him but it did make me run a better pace. Definitely happy with this part of my race day.
What would you do differently?:

Just pick up the pace in the beginning since its only a sprint tri. If I do an Olympic race my starting pace is probably good.
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged my wife and kids and looked for water!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Physically I was okay, just doing my first Tri and not sure how to pace myself. I learned a lot today and know that I can definitely push harder on the bike and make my T1 much faster!

Event comments:

Had fun at my first Tri! Can't wait until September to do it again!

Course: Getting from the pool area to the bike course required a short climb, then the course was fairly flat until you made turn onto the longer portion of the bike. That first turn left is a climb, nothing too hard and gave me a chance to gain a little ground compared to a few people. After that it was up and down a few hills. You did the course twice.
