Pre-race routine:

Early up (4am), blueberry pancakes for breakfast, and drive to Springfield with Bob, Pat, James, and Kathy. Got there in plenty of time this year, was rushed last year.
Event warmup:

Drooled over the bikes and wheels. Short jog.
Run
  • 23m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Planned to try to keep James in sight, run as many <8:00/miles as I can, and not let Kathy, who was starting 3 minutes behind me, catch me.
James took off at a pace I knew I couldn't hold (7:10 first mile), so I decided to let him go and just try to keep him in sight. Pasted the first mile marker at 7:33. Not bad, a little faster than I expected.
Noticed I was catching James as we neared the turnaround.
Tried to just keep an even pace. Caught James and made it back to transition looking forward to getting on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Do a little more run training. I've only ran about 16 miles this month before this race. I must be on the "Legend" training plan :)

Honestly, I didn't expect a good run time and will take this one for where I'm at.
Transition 1
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Run shoes and socks off, bike shoes on, helmet and go. Still this should be faster.
Bike
  • 38m 29s
  • 15 miles
  • 23.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Out of the park and onto the road. Started picking people off and just getting the legs spinning. Not a lot of wind today, but enough to feel. Tried to keep focused and not have any lulls. Kept the effort up and kept reeling people in. One thing about not running fast is there it allows me to chase people on the bike. Caught Pat right after the turnaround. I was in 21st at the turnaround. Well there were 20 riders ahead of me, Clydes, Athenas, and teams started 3 minutes ahead of me. Had a little tailwind and tried to push.

There was 1 more rider I thought I could catch the last mile. Made the turn into the park and tried to hammer, but the calves started to cramp so just kept steady effort and not let anyone pass me.
What would you do differently?:

I was :49 away from the fastest bike time on less than top of the line equipment, so happy with this.
Post race
Warm down:

Short, slow ride and chatting.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of run training and still too much weight.
