Swim
Comments: Jumped in the water and it was WARM! Maybe because the air temp was 10 degrees colder than on Saturday and I keep the suit off till the last minute so was nice and cold. No current and heard later that the current was actually flowing backwards, so most of the swim was against current. Not sure what happen...hung to the back to let the crazies go first...had a bit of anxiety at the start..but got that under control Maybe a little too much under control...for some reason I ended up swimming like it was a lazy Sunday afternoon swim. No real reason, wasn't tired, breathing was good, didn't get panic after I settled down...last two bouys was when I seemed to kick it in..just remember looking around during the swim...thinking this is strange. What would you do differently?: The practice swim is a must for me. My wetsuit is still my cruch until I do a long swim without it. Got the breathing down...now just need to swim! was 4 min off my last OLY swim time...not good since I could have PR'ed it if I had just swam. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't mount the shoes, since I haven't practiced that since last year. My T times are good..have to admit that I could always run a bit faster by spotting bike and getting was really good. Some how I managed to pass 27 people in transition from 301 to 274 overall....huh? What would you do differently?: mount the shoes next time Bike
Comments: Love the bike portion, by far my strongest and I could do better! Some how I went from 274 overall to 229 during the bike! Gotta love that! Of course if I swam better maybe I wouldn't have so many people to pass. :) Have decided that I need to upsize to the standard crank from my compact. Or I could work really hard to increase my RPM....him extra teeth I think will be easier in the short term...and the extra RPMs will be long term goal. I think all the indoor trainer work really paid off, remember telling training buddy how the trainer was kicking my butt and I could barely last 30 minutes...on the bike outside..the hills were no problem.. What would you do differently?: Bigger crank, harder push all around, gotta build up my cadence on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Another good T time..got these things down. Once again learned by watching talking with the pros. Feet on top, hop off, rack the bike, shoes on and grab the rest. Even took a big swig of drink before leaving otherwise maybe sub minute T time. What would you do differently?: Great T time, need to run a bit faster. Didn't know aid station was right out of bike..duh...should have taken my drink with me while running and tossed it at the aid station. Need to scout aid station better. Run
Comments: WOW! Had low expectations for the run. Just got the ok to start running April 16th from the Phoenix Marathon injury in Jan. Had to start all the way back at 2 miles 3x week and was only up to 3 mile runs 3x a week. So the 10K was a bit of stretch for where I was recovery wise. Plan was to run within myself and run the entire time. Was surprised to see Dave during the run. Looked for the kids...but didn't see them again...ughh...so got my FIRST blazeman roll in at the finish and it felt good! What would you do differently?: Since NYC is my "A" race this year, I just have to keep my runs within my recovery plan, which means 10% increase each week and only 3x per week. My race pace was consistent and overall about 40 sec off my just run training pace. Could have pushed a bit harder but had my final MRI reading the day after the race...so held back just in case. MRI reading the next day turned out to be clean! Post race
Warm down: Looked for the kids and the babysitter and just walked around and soaked it up. Was please with my performance. Overall I cut 12 minutes off the Rev3 Quassy race from last year...but that is a harder course. Had to hurry back to hotel to shower and hit the road. Drove to Balitmore to spend the night with the wife, but weather and traffic meant we didn't get to baltimore until 12:30am! that's a long day, nearly 20 hours! What limited your ability to perform faster: Coming back from the Jan 2011 Phoenix injury. Pool being shut down for 5 weeks prior to the race...but ultimately...I, me, Dan, limited my own performance. Event comments: Loved this race and am seriously thinking about a repeat visit next year. Great race, saw some of the Pros again, saw Justin race his first as a Pro. Got to finally meet Eric Wynn and again realized how big the Blazeman community is! Last updated: 2011-05-17 12:00 AM

Drove with the Kids on Friday from New York to Knoxville (12.5 hours) Got all checked into the hotel and settled down for the night.
Got up early on Saturday for the practice swim on the Dock. Saw some Pro's that I've done other races with so it was cool to chat a bit. Babysitter I found showed up (Thank you University of Tenn) and I got my wetsuit on and jumped into the water. brr took my breath away. Wasn't planning on doing to much but "feel" the water, so swam to the first bridge and back. Got out just as kids were coming back and they wanted to take video of me jumping in so back into the water I went..much warmer this time.
After swim, we did the Little Rev, packet pick up, dropped bike off at mechanics and generally played around the expo/finish line. Saw Matty at all3sports and chatted a bit. Mentioned to his Kelly that he looked relaxed and strong..had a feeling good things were in store for him on Sunday.
Finally got the bike back and dropped of...was a bit sunburned and feet were sore...was thinking I did a major no no the day before a race.
Also saw Justin Harris from my bike shop...his first pro race...bumped into him so many times on Saturday! Good guy and I hope he becomes a force in the sport.
Everyone was up early. Baby sitter picked me up at the Hilton and drove me down to transition (see previous day sore feet :) Got my bike all set up and my area looking good. Have learned a lot watching the pros...so I have a good T setup now.
Met Dave and a few others who came up because of my Blazeman Warrior suit! Awesome to represent. Was a bit strange since the kids were with the baby sitter and wife was in Baltimore at a conference...so just me. Kinda of wandered around until the T area closed making sure my setup stayed the way I liked it. Keep the wetsuit off and purposely got cold...so the water would feel warm.
Watched the pros swim..always impressive and can learn from watching them.
