Swim
Comments: did worse than I figured I would, but I had no OWS practice. Had to backstroke a few times to catch breath. Swallowed water too many times. What would you do differently?: get in some OWS practices. Just more training. (Pool just isn't the same) Transition 1
Comments: cleats didn't engage a few times, but wasn't too bad. What would you do differently?: Either train with less gear (gloves) or practice getting it all on. Felt this could've been faster. Bike
Comments: Coming off the swim I was a little nauseous. I tried drinking water right away but was limited thinking I was going to vomit. After about 5 miles and some GU, it settled enough to drink. I didn't drink a lot after that anyway. What would you do differently?: the bike leg itself was awesome. Differently, I would've not pushed as hard and saved some legs for the run. Transition 2
Comments: Bike slipped off rack a couple times, otherwise solid transition. So glad I brought and grabbed my running water bottle. What would you do differently?: Rack the bike solidly on the 1st attempt. Would've bought the run hats I debated on for a couple weeks. I ended up going without one and was roasting in the sun. Run
Comments: Should've bought a run hat or applied some sunscreen. Luckily I turn to tan the next day, but could've protected better. Course being marked correctly would've given me my goal time and yeah it's nice to know that, but it would've been better to be engraved in my finisher medal. What would you do differently?: Not hammer the bike so hard to have nothing left on the run. I loved the bike leg and hated the run leg. Post race
Warm down: plopped on a picnic table with a towel handed out dunked in ice water, that felt SO GREAT!! walked around a little bit, checked out everything going on. Had some chocolate milk and then some provided food. Listened to some awards being handed out then left. What limited your ability to perform faster: I was fighting a cold the whole week leading up to. I had taken sudafed that morning and didn't really feel "sick" but I know it was limiting (esp on the swim since I have asthma. I did hit my inhalers that morning though) Leaving my legs all on the bike meant my run was crappier than I'd like. I'd either train harder knowing at what level I will "race" at or back off the race pace to be able to run better. Event comments: Suggestions I'd give (although it was my first so I don't know if EVERY race is like this) There were no volunteers out on course so someone could pass out and have no help. The run mismarking is really the only thing that brought it down. Everything else seemed top notch to me. Last updated: 2011-06-18 12:00 AM

Get there early find spot to lay out gear. Shoot the breeze with my buddy who came as support. Checked out the area. Figured out where we were starting and just watched all the people.
Got in the water about 15 minutes before my heat took off. I thought the water was nice, but a few said it was cold.
