Pre-race routine:

Got up early - fixed my mini bagels (3) and ate one and saved the other two for along the way. Got the kids up and going...it never is routine. Early in the season I would be ready to go - now I pack my stuff that morning.
Event warmup:

What warm up? I was getting my transition area set up when Dave (announcer guy in the tux jacket and bike shorts) is calling all the athletes to the swim start. There wasn't any time and I didn't cut it close either.
Swim
  • 13m 7s
  • 525 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was hoping for more from the 2x2 swim start. I started wondering if it would really work when people told me what they put down for their 100 yard time. Theoretically it should work, but I wonder if people put their 100 yd time in a pool, or OWS - I guess some don't even know what their OWS time is, but mine is definately slower. I got knocked around a bit and managed to suck in more lake water (ewww) than usual. Overall, my time was par with the practice times we did before the course.`
What would you do differently?:

I really would like to find a good swim coach to help me get my technique or whatever down so I can swim faster. I am too competitive of a person to swim this slow.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

My goal for this race to was to have shorter transition times. I guess they were somewhat shorter, though since there were so many more racers than the other races I have done this year, the transition area was larger. I did run the whole way and didn't waste any time.
What would you do differently?:

I am not sure. I guess I could go at an all out sprint, but I was out of breath and was running as fast as I thought I could.
Bike
  • 40m 24s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 19.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I know the course so well, I felt like I had a pretty good advantage. I was looking forward to seeing what I could do without having to slow down for the intersections. The fastest I have ever done the course (on my bike computer) before was 19.5 ave speed and I wanted to break 20 for the race. Of course it says that I didn't do that, but I am happy with my time and on my bike computer, it says 20.1. I passed most everyone and only one girl passed me - and it was a game of cat and mouse, she would pass me, I would pass her. That kind of thing. I knew she would eventually pass me and stay past me (she did on the run finally) but it was good to have a goal person to try and beat.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I should really concentrate on hill work in the off season. I know I can do better going up hills. I know my shifting skills could be better. I guess what I need to do is just RIDE LOTS.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I was really focusing on the transitions this time so I wanted to have it shorter. I could have been quicker but Baby(bike) wasn't cooperating...I had to practically drag her down the isle to my spot. I have to do socks for the run and I didn't care about the grass. It was hard to put the socks on wet, dirty feet, but it worked out.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Run faster?
Run
  • 29m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Another goal I had for this race was to RUN and not walk. Again, I felt like I had an advantage in knowing the course so well. Of course, the first 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile was the pitts because the tree trunk legs, but once I got to the flat area where the dock was, they started to loosen up a little. By the time I got to the turn around, I was feeling much better. I always want to do the run faster, but I am happy to say that I didn't walk and made my goal of doing it under 30 minutes. I did not drink any water this time as in the last race, it really caused me precious seconds that could have made the difference between getting 2nd and 3rd. I think it made a difference this time too, but in a good way.
What would you do differently?:

I guess in the off season I need to do a lot of bike/run bricks. I really want to focus on running faster. I think the strength training I started doing has helped with that.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, talked to other friends, competitors. It was so nice to talk to people...I saw some other BTers out there - there were several that said hello. I ate some bagels, drank water, had a piece of pizza and looked for the boys.

Event comments:

This is the first time I have done this race. I knew it would be a good one and the people that put the race on did a terrific job. The race goodies were cool (stretchy laces with the race logo on them and other stuff). I was very happy to win 1st in my group. It is definately a motivator!
