Run
Comments: The weather conditions were insane. Started the race into a 20mph(?) headwind with slashing rain and stronger gusts. At times the rain felt like needles. I was supposed to start out for 2 miles in Z2, then Z3 for 6, and then 2 miles for whatever I had, but my HR was sky high right from the start even though my pace was OK. Z2? Fuggeddaboutit! Instead of managing my HR I tried to manage my pace: 2 miles ~10:30; 6 miles ~10:00; 1 mile ~9:30; last mile whatever I could push. Basically ran the whole thing in Z4 or above! Except for mile 2, every mile was faster than the one before. Finished pretty strong, under my goal of beating a 10 minute mile pace What would you do differently?: Brush up on rain-go-away dance Post race
Warm down: walked back to the tent and had a bit to eat (half bagel, half banana, cup of soup); then back to the car to put on my raincoat; headed back to the tent for the awards. Was starting to shiver by the time we headed out. What limited your ability to perform faster: the Wind! and the rain Event comments: weather was awful, but that obviously was not the organizer's fault; I'd love to try this again in better weather. into bed at 10:30, slept fairly OK, some trouble falling asleep because I kept thinking about the weather forecast.
Alarm at 6am. Normal race-day breakfast. Shake 1 hr before start; gel 15 minutes before start
stayed in the car with the heater on. Took off the extra layers about 5 minutes before and followed everyone over towards the start line. Did some small runs and some jumping to loosen up and warm up. HR was about 110 when the race started.
