Total Time = 5h 22m 19s
Overall Rank = 515/1500
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 27/107
Pre-race routine:

arrive around 5:30, set up transition area, stretch.
Event warmup:

nothing other than stretching since swim didn't start until 8am and had to be out of transition at 6:45
Swim
  • 35m 40s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

had a really good swim, with the wetsuit felt comfortable the entire way, breathing on fourth stroke easily. Navigation wasn't terrible, stayed on outside and came in at angle to turns which seemed to help avoid a lot of the traffic so turns were good.
What would you do differently?:

try to push my pace more instead of just staying so comfortable.
Transition 1
  • 03m 44s
Comments:

had trouble getting suit off, placement in the transition area was as far as you could get from bike entrance/exit.
What would you do differently?:

practice getting suit off....haven't had to use one in a couple years, and wasn't expecting it would be legal this year (glad it was!!)
Bike
  • 2h 48m
  • 56 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

good ride performed where my training allowed. Happy with perpetuem for calories and method for dumping extra bottles into from aero bottle (first year using sponge and dumping other bottles in).
What would you do differently?:

simply train more, think I can get to at least 21 average if I focus more on biking.
Transition 2
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I think the transition time was affected by the placement in the transition area, this is a really slow time for me but I didn't feel like I had any problems. was able to jog bike to spot, and run to exit. Legs felt way better on exit than have in many other races.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, just had to take off helmet and put shoes on - need to practice
Run
  • 1h 50m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

kept in mind that you CAN go out too fast and really tried to take it easy and let HR settle in the beginning - I think this was key. Had a woman in front of me that seemed to be setting a nice pace so I just got in behind her and followed, worked out really well, when she dropped back at turn. HR was getting into high Z2/Z3 but kept own pace. Planned to speed up at 10-13 but really didn't have it in me (this is where I need to work on the mental part), and just held on to the pace and sped up at 12 as much as I could.
What would you do differently?:

do a couple more bricks and with this type of increase at end.
Post race
Warm down:

headed straight for the water after walking for a few minutes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I performed to the level I trained. This was a really good race for me. I think to do better I need to focus on bike and do much more riding outside during winter.

Event comments:

Love this race, can't wait 'till next year!

tried to stick with pacing plan, was able to meet nutrition plan (perpetuem drink) all felt good. Had issues with saddle that I knew might surface - pain/pressure points in legs and back - about half way. Worked through it, about 40 mi point felt better able to continue to push.
