Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:30 am. Stayed downtown so I wouldn't have to leave at 2. Drank some gatorade and got dressed. Went down stairs and rode to transition. I was 3 blocks so I got there pretty quick. Got to transition before it opened, but once it did I thoght to myself how huge transition was. Found a pretty good spot right on the end of the row, and started setting up.
Event warmup:

Transition closed at 5:45 and my wave didn't start till 8:10, so I had some time to kill. Walked to Michigan Ave and got a bagle from Dunkin, then walked back to the swim start. Sat on the sea wall and watched the sprint waves swim by, then at about 7:30 decided to get ready. Did some stretching, the got the wetsuit half way on. Found my wife and munchkin, and checked my swim gear bag. Did a little more stretching, then my pre-race porta potty break, then into the chute. ITS GO TIME
  • 55m 12s
  • 1640 yards
  • 03m 22s / 100 yards

Swim time also included a 450 yard run to the transition area. Overall my swim was good for me.
What would you do differently?:

Get more swim training. Its as simple as that. More time in the water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s

Got going pretty well, but I just couldn't get my feet into my shoes. I was already onto Lake Shore before I finally got my shoes situated and strapped.
What would you do differently?:

Get a little more practice getting my shoes on while on the bike.
  • 1h 35m 44s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.57 mile/hr

Bike was stolen from my garage Thursday night (race waas Sunday), so I had to ride my 35 lb heavy mountain bike. I did get some slick tires on is, so that helped a little. Special shout out to NRG42 and StartingToTri for offering the use of their bikes. Even though I was not able to meet up with them, I still really appreciate the offers. Only in this community would that happen.
What would you do differently?:

Keep my garage door closed so my bike didn't get stolen.
Transition 2
  • 04m 6s

So since I was way BOP, everyone in front of me in transition WRECKED my transition. I physically had to move some bikes to get mine re racked, and people had thrown all there stuff on top of mine. probably added at least a minute to my time trying to find my spot because people racked all over my spot.
What would you do differently?:

be faster on the bike so i'm not the last one into transition.
  • 1h 02m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile

Started really well on the run. Was doing about an 8 minute pace when my calf cramped bad (happened on the swim too). Had to walk about a mile to get it worked out. Finished strong, and having the announcer call your name at the finish line will definately give you that extra kick and makes you feel AWESOME.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Walked through the finisher area to find the wife and munchkin. Ate a banana and drank some gatorade. Did some light stretching before walking back to the swim gear check, then walked back to transition, then rode (in the rain) back to the hotel to get checked out. Then walked to Solder Field (did a lot of walking) to the car. Fell asleep on the ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swimming. and riding a 35lb mountain bike

Event comments:

can't wait till next year

First Olympic distance, and first time wearing a wetsuit. Still really need to work on my swimming. A swim coach is in order for the off-season.
Suit: Aqua Sphere (rental)
Course: Pretty simple course. My last race, spotting was awful, but since this one stayed parallel to the shore, I did much better.
