Comments: Peeked to site the second buoy and got way off course. I felt a paddle boarder tap my shoulder and point me back on course. I ended up swimming over 200 meters extra... bad start. What would you do differently?: Know where the buoys are. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Pulled wetsuit down coming out of the water. Smooth albeit slow with a long run up the ramp to the Transition area. ![]() Bike
Comments: The transition starts right up a hill so the traffic was a little tough to navigate. Passed lots of people on the first hill so that was an improvement. Kept a decent cadence throughout the bike. Comfortable in aero which was a big help on the hills. What would you do differently?: Train better for the hills. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I was pretty smooth and quick through T2. ![]() Run
Comments: More training in the hills will be a priority next year. I was able to maintain a decent pace compared to many others who were walking but slower than I would have liked What would you do differently?: Prepare for the hills better next time. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Met with some friends from the Tri Club to sit in the grandstands and cheer others on to the finish. A Gatorade recovery drink, lots of water and a banana were all I had for the first couple hours, it was just too hot for food. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience, being my first time at Wildflower and my first Olympic distance event I held back a little on all 3 events just as a precaution. Next year I will go for it. Event comments: This was a great race and very well organized. They have definitely perfected the setup through the 30 years and put on a great event. I will do this one again! The common theme for me was better hill training. I heard it from a lot of people but needed to experience it for myself, next year I will be better prepared. Nothing special, hard boiled egg and 2 cups of coffee when I woke up. The race start wasn't until 9:55 so I had another banana while setting up in transition.
Rode bike from camp to transition, some basic stretching and then a jog around transition to get numbered.
