Swim
Comments: I have not been in a pool for over 3 weeks because of an issue with my right shoulder. I knew the swim for the race was not going to be an issue because of the favorable current but was a bit nervous. My goal going in was 20-22 min (I was silently hoping for 20 but it seemed to low). I killed the swim at 17:49. I can only imagine what I would have done if I had been training. I loved the time trial start. It really moved along and kept the swim course thin. There was a bit of debris in the river and at one point I was over come by the stench of dead fish. What would you do differently?: Training.... Transition 1
Comments: My Garmin shows the distance to be .55 miles. I did slow for a fast rinse at the showers because the swim exit it very silty and you come out slightly brown...lol. My goggles fell out of my sleeve and I went back 15 or so feet to pick them up. I then tied them on my sleeve and tucked them into my waste as I finished my run to transition. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Bike
Comments: I was having lower back issues starting at about mile 18; thankfully they didn't carry over into the run. For nutrition I drank coconut water starting at around mile 8 and had a single gel (pre mixed with water in a small gel bottle) at mile 23. I think my nutrition on the bike leg was spot on. What would you do differently?: Most of my bike training has been for sprint distances. I think riding with the Cuda's is going to help my bike leg tremendously. I need to train hills also. I was getting a little psyched out by the hills. Transition 2
Comments: I decided to wear socks because of all the walking I had done the previous 2 days and I was nervous about blisters. The simple task of putting socks took at least 30 seconds for me. What would you do differently?: Not walk around so much the days before a race. Run
Comments: The spectators made the run fun and exciting. What would you do differently?: I drank cyto max and I should have stuck to water. I cramped up a bit at mile 3. This is the 3rd race in the row I have had to stop for the bathroom. This race it was mile 5 and it took a 1:10. With out the pit stop I would have been right at goal for the race. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, did a little stretching and re-hydrated. What limited your ability to perform faster: My weight. I was at 193 when I signed up for this race and was hoping to be low 180's on race day but food won and I ended up being 201 on race day. If I want to be age group competitive I need to get closer to my race weight. Event comments: I loved this race. The bike ride was amazing even with all the hills. I loved the sights throughout the ride including the GW Bridge, row of Trump buildings, the river, graffiti and woodland areas. The volunteers and spectators along the run were great. This race is tied for my favorite race to date. Last updated: 2012-06-04 12:00 AM

I was a bit nervous going into this race because I had such high expectations and have been anticipating it for such a long time. The race had a mandatory bike check in on Sat. Early dinner the night before, put all my gear together and was in bed by 9:15. Woke up at 3am numbered myself, prepped my water bottles and had yogurt and a banana for breakfast. We arrived at transition just as it opened at 4:15. I brought my own tire pump but they had pumps secured to the fence about every 15 feet which was very nice. I exited transition at 4:45. This was the smoothest pre-race experience I have had.
The start area was a little restrictive and the number of participants and spectators made it very difficult for a proper warm up. The walk to swim start was a mile and that ended up being my warm up with some shoulder exercises and stretching. I find that I need to do a swim warm up more so than my other legs but we were not allowed to jump in the river so I did the best I could warming up my shoulders.
