Pre-race routine:

3 days prior, started carbing up with lots of rice, bread, fruits, chips, etc. Lot's of water. Skipped the run 3 days out, but ran 8K the day before.

Pasta dinner the night before with a bunch of the Calgary runners who were in town (took up half a restaurant).

Up at 5:30 - Borrowed a bowl and spoon from the hotel and had 2 packets of oatmeal and some pita bread. Then off to catch the subway to head downtown to catch the buses.

Talk about an efficient machine. 5+ lineups for the buses, all filtering to the front with a legion of volunteers putting everyone in lines to load up onto 17-20 school buses which are replaced as soon as they roll out. Once on board, police escort and all feeder roads closed to get us out of the city. Amazing to witness.

Once at the start in Hopkinton you just sit around in the village which is setup in the highschool and middle school fields. Lots of potties but I recommend you bring your own paper, as well as something to sit on and clothing to toss at the start. I read a bit of my book but not much.

Event warmup:

Sat around lining up for potties, watching others - enjoying the experience.

Comments:

Something about over-hydrating for me. I peed gallons before the race, and still had to go TWICE during the first half. And I don't mean I was uncomfortable, I mean a gallon each time. It was crazy. Both times in the trees so only cost me 1:45 total.

What would you do differently?:

Carb load but not drink excessive amounts of liquid. Train downhills!

Post race
Warm down:

Walked away, asked a group of cops where the nearest Burger King/Wendy's was - they sent me away to Park street where I caught the subway and was back at the hotel before the bombs went off. Glad they didn't send me to the ones near the finish...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of weight discipline, lots of minor injuries compared to last race.

Event comments:

Not sure I'll do it again anytime soon (logistics/cost, not the terrorist aspect). But it certainly is a lifetime event that I'm glad I was able to experience.

Avg HR was 153. Weight was up over 160 for sure compared to 153 in Nov race.
Course: It's Boston. Didn't find the first half that fast, but the 2nd half downhills were murder. I was looking forward to the uphills. Even ignoring the 4 newton hills, the whole thing is rolling terrain. There are books on the subject of how to tackle it. I did negative split but that's partly because of the 2 mins of potty breaks. :)
