Pre-race routine:

Came into the campground on Friday. Played around on Saturday - took the jet ski on Lake Erie and had a relaxing eve getting everything laid out for the morn. Allergies were horrendous and was stuffed up but slept OK. Lightning and thunder woke me up around 4 - tossed and turned another hour then got up,dressed, ate and out the door by 6:15. Storm had passed about an hour earlier.

NOTE: I used all females for the AG rank data. There were only 2 of us in the F 50-54 AG and I was first in every category.

Event warmup:

Rode bike from campground to transition. At first they made an announcement that we had to rack by number but the racks had a bunch of different numbers and no sequence so I spent a while trying to find my spot before they announced to rack wherever you wanted. Did a run to the nice bathroom facilities and back. They announced the race would be delayed by 20 minutes. Found my BT buddy, Matt and we chatted quickly. He seemed relaxed and ready. HFP does an open prayer at the finish line so I attended that, then they announced that the races were going to start and to get stuff out of transition. Got wetsuit on then headed to the water for a warm up since I still had about a half hour wait until my wave. Was just about to go under when I heard my name and saw my hubby and daughter waving to me. Don't know how they found me in the sea of 650 wetsuit-clothed athletes but I quickly did some strokes and headed to them. It was a nice feeling to have support because they never come to races but this one is spectator friendly so it worked well. They helped me stay warm until my wave was called.

  • 1640 yards

Comments:

I felt totally comfortable in the swim. Breathing was controlled and sighting was pretty spot on - not lifting up too many times. I was in a pack of people weaving in and out of each other for the entire 2 loops which never happens - I'm usually left behind. I felt confident being able to stick with people although I couldn't find anyone to draft off. Got popped in the nose at one point and I just laughed. Based on my time last year I figured I'd be out in 32 minutes. Was disappointed when I saw 33 on the watch.

What would you do differently?:

This was a run in from the beach and I don't know how to properly do that since this is the only race that has that type of entry. Need to read up/practice that for next year. I also question whether I should wear a watch any more. Having not met my time goal made me a little grumpy for the rest of the race. You'd think it would motivate me to go faster but it only caused me to be unhappy and I didn't like that feeling with so much of the race left.

Comments:

Again, my family was right there at T1 so I spent an extra few seconds giving them shout-outs. And I smiled for a camera shot. :) I usually don't have that but I'll take the extra time and be thankful for their support any day of the week. For once my wetsuit wasn't stuck on my heel. Yay!

Bike

  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.81 mile/hr
Comments:

The grumpiness from the swim time really kicked in here with the strong winds on the bike. I saw Matt turn into the park finishing his bike and was able to give a shout because he was doing great! The course is flat as a pancake so I thought that the headwinds which hit me at the first turn would be nice tail winds on the other section. Instead I had headwinds then crosswinds then a slight tailwind where I cranked as hard as I could on about a half mile stretch then crosswinds again and then stronger headwinds. Repeat. At times I saw my pace drop to 16 and at times I felt like I'd be blown off my bike so I got out of aero to hold on. That made me grumpier, but I was giving it my all. I was passed by two guys and two girls during the 25 miles and I passed a bunch, too (just didn't count). My goal was to do 1:15 but that was before the wind factor so I thought I'd been out there forever and my brain couldn't do the math (duh). I wasn't pleased with my performance until I got home on Monday and saw the results online. Bike - 1:15:44. Yippee! A 6 minute improvement over last year.

What would you do differently?:

Again, maybe leave the watch at home. It was only a hindrance to me this race. Change my attitude. Don't let a number on a watch determine my happiness level. I love my bike. My average pace on my Oly in May was 19.1 (hillier course) and this one was 19.81. I'd love to see 20 so I'll just have to keep working. I'm confident without the wind I would've gotten it, but que sera, sera.

Comments:

My back and shoulders were really tight starting out. I attributed that to holding onto my bike so hard during the cross winds. Took it easy. Saw Matt who'd kindly stayed to give me a cheer. Thanks, Matt - you looked great after finishing your race! Pretty uneventful run. Saw my family twice and gave them some love. Passed a 16 yo kid but he passed me back at the turnaround. Was passed by two ladies and a handful of guys. I kept running except at the aid station where I stopped and poured several cups of water on my head. For some reason I was hot (due to the humidity I guess) although the temps were in the 70s and there was a wind. I hadn't brought my fuel belt with any drink so I took in the fluids at each AS but the water which was lukewarm and awful tasting. Goal was to run under an hour and to finish in 2:50. Did both. Yippee again.

What would you do differently?:

Hubby's comment - "it sure doesn't look like you're running very fast". I guess after looking at the overall numbers this WAS my worst discipline in comparison to others. I know that since taking on longer endurance events and with age, my pace has lessened although I feel better during the run. I guess I need to kick it up a notch so I have some kind of respectable pace going. Still - improved another 6 minutes over last years time and one of only a few Oly's where I've run under 1 hour.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit with family. Drank water and ate some fruit. Waited for results to be posted. Last year they were immediately digitally posted on two large screens but this year the screens weren't up. The results of the other race distances were taped to a board. Waited around more, packed up transition and checked back, but still no results so just left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just me. Swim faster, bike faster and especially run faster - that will do it. Overall, though I'm pleased with my race performance which was over an 8 minute improvement from last year.

Event comments:

I love the location of this race - the state park is beautiful. Couldn't help the delay in the start due to the storm that came through. When the results finally showed up online on Monday they had a lot of errors - sprint people listed as oly distance and a lot of "No Results" next to people. On Tuesday morn they'd corrected the sprint people out but they added two more minutes to everyone's swim. When I contacted them, they thought the waves went off two minutes sooner than they did. Huh? They corrected it back. Obviously they need to fix their timing issue but other wise a great race.
