Pre-race routine:
Drove to race sight. It was 36 degrees when we arrived. Went to packet pickup and body marking, then set up transition. After that we sat in the truck to stay warm until time to put wetsuits on. Captured a beautiful sunrise during body marking.
Event warmup:
No warm up. The water was 54 degrees, and I was NOT going to get in it until I absolutely had to. I figured the few minutes between waves would be enough to get acclimated. My warm up consisted of trying to get into my wetsuit with 7 extra pounds! I've not had my wetsuit on since I raced in it last October.
Swim
17m 26s
820 yards

Comments:
I got into the water with my teammates. The water temp was shockingly cold. I got under water to get my face wet and let water get into my wetsuit to release the compression around my chest. Brrrr!!! I took off slow because I knew I would not be able to catch my breath in the cold water. The first 200 yards went well, but then I did start having difficulty breathing up to the first triangle buoy. So I slowed down again and just plugged along.
What would you do differently?:
Train. I've only been to the pool 3 times since last fall and have not worn my wetsuit since Beach2Battleship.
Transition 1
03m 45s
Comments:
I dropped my goggles on the way to T1 and had to go back to get them. I fumbled taking my Garmin off so that I could get my wetsuit sleeves off. It was cold, so I dried off some and put on a dry jersey (I swam with just a sports bra under my wetsuit). I planned on wearing arm warmers and gloves, but had a hard time getting the arm warmers on. I tried to put on gloves, but gave up because I was too wet and sticky. Had to put my Garmin back on because I took it off to get my wetsuit off. All in all, I just fumbled around with too many things. I opted not to bother with socks.
What would you do differently?:
Not try to do so much in transition.
Bike
44m 33s
14 miles

Comments:
This was two loops around the lake. When I got to my second loop, I kept feeling like I was sliding forward. I couldn't figure out why until I finally realized my left aero bar was dropping! It was like when you are riding a horse and it puts its head down to eat grass. Needless to say, I could not be aero during the second loop.
What would you do differently?:
Train. I have not ridden my Tri bike since Beach2Battleship, and have only had the road bike out 3 times (and few spin classes).
Transition 2
01m 37s
Comments:
Got to my rack and took of my cycle shoes. I tried to get my bare feet into my running shoes, but could not. My little toe kept sticking out the side but since my feet were totally numb from cold I could not feel to get my shoes on!
Run
26m 28s
3.11 miles
08m 31s min/mile
Comments:
My feet remained numb for a long while into the run. It was slower than I had hoped, but pretty much in line with my current fitness level.
What would you do differently?:
Train more.
Post race
Warm down:
Beer.
What limited your ability to perform faster:
Lack of training during the off season and several extra pounds.
