Pre-race routine:

Slept for about 3 hours and 20 minutes since I had to work the night before.
Had coffee and cereal and drove to Hyannis in the pitch dark.
I met up with my co workers- 5 of us that work in the lab raced together.

I saw Ellen and her friend Donna and we chatted for a while and watched the sun rise...that is something I never see!! It was beautiful and I was thinking that I should get up early more often...(probably not) I tried to take a picture but it didn't quite do it justice.
Event warmup:

I was determined that I was going to warm up in the ocean till I felt comfortable swimming. I didn't want the swim panicky feeling to happen again. I was so happy to see that the water was much calmer than it was in June. They had to shorten the course because of the chop that day.
I swam for about 10-15 minutes till I got my breathing down.
I was thinking of not wearing my wetsuit...but I was happy to have it since I kept touching jellyfish with my hands...yuck!

Swim
  • 09m 20s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started in the middle of the pack way to the left so I could stay to the far outside. It was a good choice for me because I stayed by myself for the most part. I ended up swimming extra which is fine because I felt totally comfortable...I was soooo happy I warmed up!
On the last part of the swim I was happy that I could see the sand at the bottom...then it looked dark again...it looked like seaweed but it was moving!! As I got shallower I saw it was hundred (thousands) of black/brown crabs..not the normal crabs either...WTF! This was scary because I was NOT going to stand up in a whole pile of crabs. I kept going until I was about up to my knees then they started to dissipate. I ran out pretty fast!
I'm glad I didn't see those things when I was warming up!
I saw Glen on the way out of the swim!

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This is a big tri and you see plenty of people freaking out on the swim.
To me the ocean is a lot scarier to swim in than a lake, so I am happy with staying calm.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

stepped into the pools at the swim exit to get most of the sand off.
I felt dead and had to sit to take of my wetsuit and put my bike shoes and socks on.
Still slow at transition
What would you do differently?:

move faster...not wear socks
Bike
  • 33m 25s
  • 10.1 miles
  • 18.13 mile/hr
Comments:

I was thirsty from the salt water!!
I really didn't feel very energetic but had a good bike anyway.

This ride was uneventful. The course is very crowded and there are lots of beginners who stay way over to the left making passing dangerous.
What would you do differently?:

I think I needed an energy gel or something.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I always say I need Yankz so I bought them. Maybe they will make it on my shoes sometime...preferably before next weekends tri!
What would you do differently?:

move faster
Run
  • 35m 31s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 10m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I had some serious negative thoughts for the first 2 miles. I just felt so tired and sluggish. I couldn't stop thinking about how much I hate to run and that I suck at it and all that. When I saw mile 2 I decided my suffering would be over sooner if I actually ran faster. I was starting to feel better. I talked to several people. My split for the 3rd mile was 9:45..cool. I sprinted (if you can call it that) for the last half mile....lots of crowd support. I ended up with a decent (for me) run time! The last section of running on the sand is kind of a drag.
What would you do differently?:

Limit the negativity.
I was bummed because I felt worse doing this sprint than I felt doing an oly 2 weeks before. Some days are just better than others.

Post race
Warm down:

The hospital I work for provided us with t-shirts and hats so we could take pictures. Good PR for them. That took us a while. Frank is gonna try to get the hosp. to get us tri-suits for next year.
I hung out with Ellen, her husband Mike, and Donna afterward for raffles and awards. It was a beautiful day to sit in the sun.
Ellen placed in athena...she had an awesome race! Nice hardware too. Yeah Ellen!
We then went to Dunkin' Donuts for iced coffee....ahhh tasted so good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the 2 nights of inadequate sleep leading up to the race. Plus I don't think I ate enough before.

Event comments:

This is a fun, very large tri. They do a great job. I would like to see separate times for the transitions!
