Total Time = 1h 37m 42s
Overall Rank = 63/339
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/29
Pre-race routine:

Got up early - ate the same breakfast minus the PB on flat bread (kind of forgot)
Day did not go as well as planned - more on that later
Picked up team mate and arrived on site at 7:30 am
Event warmup:

Got organized - met team mates and went to water
Did a few strokes and waited for start
Swim
  • 15m 38s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Terrible swim
Lots of wave and could not breathe or swim - we had waves coming from everywhere
Felt a little unwell during swim (motion sickness)
Usually out of water in 13:00
Goggles were also leaking - STOP BEING CHEAP AND BUY THE AQUASPHERE VISTA ...
What would you do differently?:

Use ear plugs
stop getting discouraged when swim is bad - know that the bike will allow you to catch a lot of people
GET NEW GOGGLES
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Getting better
Calmed down and tried to stop dizziness - had to sit down
What would you do differently?:

Prevent motion sickness - will try ear plugs
Bike
  • 44m 57s
  • 25 kms
  • 33.53 km/hr
Comments:

This is where the race fell apart
I passed everyone - got passed by one Duathlon dude which was a little annoying going up 'the beast of the east'
Managed to handle bike very well on cross winds
Going down I had to move left quickly as wind and branches came across the road; almost went in the ditch - 75kph on a bike - try to stop...
Regained composure but by now i knew someone from OAT had seen me...

What would you do differently?:

Try to stay on the right side of the road - DO NOT CROSS THE YELLOW LINE AT ALL COSTS
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

This was the best I have done so far once I get to the rack
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 34m 17s
  • 7 kms
  • 04m 56s  min/km
Comments:

I felt great after the first 2k
got into a groove at 4:45 per k - the first to were slightly over 5:00/k
Getting better
What would you do differently?:

Try to get into a groove earlier
Post race
Warm down:

Had a few drinks and did some stretches
Talked to a few team members and went to look for time - improved by 25 positions and 3 minutes form last year as of 15 minutes post-race
Went to look at results later to find out I was DQ'd which I knew it was a possibility
Went to speak to OAT officials - while I understand their position, they were simply not listening - another guy from my age group had a similar situation - so 3 out of 11 were in the 45-49 AG and two of us were pretty close in the final time ...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

poor swim - mental thing again

Event comments:

This is a local favourite every year - the competition is tough in 45-49 AG as always; improved by 3 mnutes and 20 positions from last year
Lots of volunteer and great food
Due to unforeseen events going down the "Beast of the East" I cannot say I am happy with the end result
