Swim
Comments: I suck at swimming. I know this, but even this was a really bad effort for me. Granted it was no wetsuit, the water was really warm, and there was a decent chop on the water from the strong wind. The funny thing is I thought as I was swimming that it was a pretty good effort. My navigation was pretty good and I was passing a decent number of people. When I got out of the water and saw the time it was pretty disheartening though, and after that I feel like I mailed it in a little. What would you do differently?: More swim training Transition 1
Comments: Large TA so that accounts for some of the time, but I was kind of down about the swim and didn't really rush it. Also dropped a bottle on the way out and had to go back for it. What would you do differently?: Hustle and not be a little bitch about a bad swim, and not drop a bottle. Bike
Comments: Probably 2-3 minutes slower than expected, but it was very windy, and the course is not conducive to a fast time due to the number of turns and turnarounds. Also just wasn't feeling it and didn't really push myself as hard as I should have. What would you do differently?: Push harder Transition 2
Comments: Pretty clean overall, not much I could do to go faster here. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Just an ok run, again I couldn't seem to motivate myself to go faster. But not a terrible run and kind of in line with what I've been doing in races lately. I just don't seem to have the run speed this year that I've had in past years. What would you do differently?: Not sure Post race
Warm down: Grabbed an ice cream sandwich and some chocolate milk and made the long walk to the TA, packed up and made the long walk back to the car, and headed home. We stopped in Story City to hit up Pizza Ranch on the way home :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, lack of mental toughness to let go of a bad swim... Event comments: Great volunteers! Thank you so much to the people that come out and allow me to have fun! Events on time was a no due to delay from thunderstorms, definitely not anyone's fault. 2nd to last tri of the year for me, and it's been a season of less than stellar results so far. My training's been hit and miss all year really, so I didn't expect great results here either, especially given the very hot temperatures recently and the non-wetsuit swim. The wife and I headed over from Cedar Falls around 2PM on Saturday, and right after I left I realized I forgot to renew my USAT membership, so we had to go to the hotel first to do that and print the temporary card. After that we did packet pickup, which took forever because of the useless mandatory athlete briefing. That was basically a waste of an hour and all of the information was communicated by email. Two thumbs down on that! After packet pickup it was Perkins for dinner (mmmmm...pancakes), then back to the hotel to watch college football until bedtime. I woke up at 4 to the sounds of thunderstorms, but luckily the rain blew out by 6 or so, so it didn't really impact my race. The parking situation sucked, it took about 45 min to get in the parking lot, and it was a loooonnnnggg way from the transition area. Got that set up and then waited around until my wave was set for the time trial start.
Some light swimming while waiting for the start.
