Comments: We were fortunate that the weather was overcast for most of the bike ride, although it was still a little hot and humid. As a result I felt good and decided to push the bike, achieving an avg pace of 21mph (fast for me) at 165 bpm. I had my best bike split at this distance, but looking back I probably pushed it too much due to the hot weather conditions. What would you do differently?: Try to stick to the target pace a little more and work harder on my bike endurance and fitness. Transition 2

Comments: By the time I started running the temp was in the mid 90's with high humidity and total sun exposure. I was coming off the bike with a great time and was shooting for a moderate run in less than 2 hrs to achieve a new PR. I was able to run the first 3 miles at around 8:30 which was a good time. However, after that the heat and a strong effort on the bike took their toll and the wheels began to fall off. I really had to push it on the run in order to avoid walking and try to come in with the best time possible give the conditions. I saw a good number of friends slow down to a walk, so I knew the conditions where really hard also for others as well. I ended finishing the run in 2:07 which was way slower than anticipated (but it could had been worst if I had walked). What would you do differently?: Pace better on the bike and train more in the heat to do better in extremely hot weather Post race
Warm down: After crossing the finish line I went to the finisher's tent, got some water and jumped into an iced water tub to cool down. The heat was really bad and I saw a good number of friends who were getting hydrated in the medical tent through IV's. I had never gotten one, but the heat was really bad and I was exhausted and dehydrated, so I also got an IV fluid solution. Afterwards, I had some food and caught with friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: I should have paced a little more on the bike due to the hot conditions in order to avoid suffering so much through the run. Event comments: After suffering through the race due to really hot conditions at the end, I was still happy with my effort and my new PR of 5:21 (20 minute improvement on this same race from the previous year). I really had to push it during the run and it took a good amount of mental and physical effort to avoid walking and still achieve a good time. Woke up at 4:50am, got my gear ready and had a muffin with jelly, a banana and juice. Arrived at the Naval Base at 6:00am with enough time to get everything ready for a 7am start time.
Got a chance to catch-up with friends and then get in a 5 min warm-up swim.
