Pre-race routine:

Clothing choices: UA coldgear tights, UA coldgear mock turtleneck (blue), Swiftwick pursuit socks, PI windproof jacket, new hat from City Sports, and my warmer pair of running gloves. Wore my hockey jacket overtop as an extra layer until we were ready to go for our warm-up.

Got up around 5:45, took the dogs out, fed them, got dressed for the race and grabbed a few items to eat on the way: turkey and cheese roll-up, applesauce, iced tea. Found a shorter route than the one I'd previously used and I liked it a lot - got me there in good time and on this holiday morning there was little traffic. Realized over half way there that I didn't grab my Garmin. Brilliant. Oh well, not much could be done about that now.

Got a great parking spot near LT, backed in for a quick getaway! Walked toward packet pickup, found LT coming back from pickup, so we walked together to get my stuff. Took goodie bag back to the car and we sat in her car to stay warm, chatting until closer to race time. Eventually decided to walk to port-a-johns then do a little warm up run, both for the race and to stay warm!! The wind made it feel soooo much colder, it was really whipping. We timed it perfectly - no waiting in line but they even until we finished a line was forming and until we got back from our little 1/2 mile warm up jog the lines were long!

They had people holding pace signs so we parted ways (she's much faster than I) and I stretched and jumped around and did what I could to keep my warmed up body warmed up. The announcer thanked us for coming out and had a local pastor bless us with a prayer and shortly we were off! To my surprise the pacers stayed put and everyone went around them. Apparently they were only there for organizational purposes!
Event warmup:

Easy jog, maybe 1/2 mile with LT both to stay warm and to warm-up for the race!

Comments:

Announcer began the countdown from 10 and we were off!

The people with pace signs did help to keep people organized - there seemed to be a little less jostling for position/passing people than last year. Not sure of what pace I was keeping, my plan was simply to go out a little conservatively then pour it on later in the race.

As is the norm, I saw the lead runners going the other way around the time I hit mile 1. Fast little buggers, they are! :)

Nothing too spectacular or exciting to report, except for the guy running with a frozen turkey and his buddy running with a football, which he and another buddy kept passing back and forth along the route. He even tried to shoot a basket with it (the football, not the turkey although that woulda been hella funny!) while passing some kid's hoop that was out by the street. Of course there were the obligatory people running in turkey hats, both of the cooked and uncooked varieties (plush, of course, not real birds).

Eventually I warmed up enough that I took off my gloves and unzipped my jacket a little. I'm such a sweater no matter what the temp.

Turned the corner to leave the development and saw Santa in his convertible VW bug! I warned the father/son duo near me to be on their best behavior because Santa is watching them! Ha!

Making the penultimate turn toward the finish line I saw LT coming my way looking for me. She spotted me and we ran together until the final turn toward the finish when she told me to push hard the rest of the way in. I did, but I may have started my push too early, like basically when I saw her! Oh well, I was still happy with my effort.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my Garmin, otherwise very happy with the result.
Post race
Warm down:

None. Crossed the finish line, grabbed a bottle of water, caught my breath while looking for LT then we walked to the cars and I left. No time to mess around or grab post-race snacks because I had to get home to shower and get ready for the family get-together.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was getting a little wheezy/tight from my asthma because I was really pushing it at the end. Happy with the result in spite not running a whole lot lately.

Event comments:

Love doing this race because it's fun doing a Thanksgiving event plus it's well-run and benefits a local school's ice hockey program. The kids come out and help at the water stations, etc. which is cool, too. Also, I love the graphics on the shirt! Saw one of my TKD sensais; her sons play hockey on the team that benefits from the race and she was there to volunteer.

This race is a walk/run, so my seemingly high placement in the overall is not so true...LOL!
