Total Time = 2h 27m 33s
Overall Rank = 39/45F
Age Group = 65-69
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

It's hard to know how to eat for a race that starts at 6 pm. Ate non-race breakfast (eggs, juice); early regular lunch at11; oatmeal with yogurt & raisins at 2; half peanut butter Sandwich h on ww bread at 4, Hammer bar at 5ish, 1 scoop liquid Perpetuem at about 5:30.
Got to the venue by 3:00. Last year arrived later & had to wait in a long line to enter, allowing no time to warm-up. Had loads of time to warm up & socialize.
Event warmup:

Ran easy about 10 minutes, kind of early, about 4:30. Rode the bike around the parking lots, checking the shifting and practicing feet out & feet into the shoes. At 5, rode 1 lap around the track, 3.4 miles.
Run
  • 16m 27s
  • 1.6 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Pace about a minute/mile slower than previous year. Not too happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Set watch view to pace, not HR?
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Everything went so smoothly, as practiced, that I had no memory of it. T1 time was 8th of all 45 women all ages. The best part of my race
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 41m 45s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 14.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Total time was 2:45 SLOWER than last year, same course. It should have been faster if only because my equipment is better. Had problems last year with front derailleurs and had no use of my smallest chaining.(of triple). Mashed hills with low cadence. This year, new (to me) bike, everything worked perfectly, same gearing, used 60mm wheels.
Also, last year I was fearful of the curves at the bottom of the steep descents & applied my brakes a few times. This year, on a positive note, I felt I rode through the curves much more freely; no braking, pedaling coming out of the turns.
Consumed 3 Perpetuem solids, 2 Endurolyte caps, & most of a bottle of water.
What would you do differently?:

I'd really like to know how to improve this because I'm at a loss as to why it was so bad.
Last year, I did practice much more on local steep hills than this year. I would be inclined to do more of that.
Also, I wonder if riding a lap to warm up was a mistake & wore me out before the race started.
NEW THOUGHT: I wonder if the 60mm's are the wrong wheels for a race with this many hills. I will need to do some controlled experiments on local hilly routes, riding them with the same bike under similar conditions, with the 60's and then with ordinary wheels.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I wear cheapo water shoes for multipart races, no laces. Very quick on & off. But I put them on the wrong feet & had to do it twice! Still, my time was 20th out of 45 total females of all ages, so not so bad.
What would you do differently?:

I think I will mark the left shoe with a big "L" in bright tape. Also, I need to think about running faster from my transition spot to the exit.
Run
  • 21m 34s
  • 1.63 miles
  • 13m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Mindlessly ran along, following the only other runner in sight. She missed a turn and so did I. Classic stupid error.
Even allowing for the extra distance, pace was more than a minute slower than previous year.
What would you do differently?:

FOLLOW THE COURSE MARKERS NOT THE RUNNER IN FRONT OF ME!
Transition 3
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Fumbled the helmet just a little, so it was not as good as T1. Still, time was 12th out of total 45 women of all ages.
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to practice.
Bike
  • 45m 12s
  • 10.2 miles
  • 13.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Total time was 3:30 SLOWER than previous year, on better equipment.
Didn't feel winded or fatigued, but my hamstrings were giving out and my glutes were spent. Definitely felt like they were my limiting factor. Spun as high a cadence as I could maintain.
Consumed same as bike 1: 3 Perpetuem solids, 2 Endurolyte caps, most of a water bottle. Felt like I was stuffing down that last Perpetuem, but thought I'd need it for the run.
What would you do differently?:

I do not know. Adjust my training, but don't know what.
Transition 4
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Got them on the right feet this time!
Still 20th out of 45 total females
What would you do differently?:

Run faster out of transition? But sadly my legs were totally numb!
Run
  • 18m 25s
  • 1.63 miles
  • 11m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Pace was 1 minute slower than previous year.
Legs felt trashed through much of the run, but stayed on course.
Next year, I'll make it an A race & start earlier.
What would you do differently?:

I'd sure like to know.

Post race
Warm down:

No time to stretch. 8:30 (pm) by the time I finished; just enough time to eat something (Recoverite drink, 1/2 Recoverite bar, 1/2 pb sandwich, small piece of chicken.); collect my award & pack up my stuff. Ate small supper when I got home. Sounds like I ate a lot, but calories in for the day was just about equal to calories out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Muscle fatigue.

Event comments:

It's a tough, challenging race but distinctive and fun. Would be scary in the rain. Not too many older women do it: only 3 in their 50's, myself (67), and one 70. The latter was in my AG last year and beat me by 7 minutes. If I hadn't gone off course, I would have beat her this year, or at least been neck-and-neck. So there's that; also, we became friends.
