Swim
Comments: Great swim for me, fastest to date at this race! Went out quick and caught a nice draft to the 1st buoy then I lost him in the cluster. On the long portion tried to find another set of legs but the two I did find would shift into breast stroke, wtf really. The 2nd guy I end up swimming over his right leg and arm. I was about half way done so I moved over to the small buoys and swam a nice straight line to the 2nd turn. Drafted where ever could pushing the last segment to the pier stairs. Started our with a slow jog on the pier but was running at a decent pace by the time I got to the T1 mat. What would you do differently?: Not much other than fight to stay onto the legs I was drafting at the start to the 1st turn. I really should put a bit more effort into training and times will drop more. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was ok, I was off to the right side so had a bit longer track than some others to the exit. Had some issue getting my right shoe clipped in and delayed getting up to speed for a bit. What would you do differently?: Not much, wish I had a video of it to see what could be improved at the rack if anything. Over the time is only 3 sec slower than my fastest for this race. Bike
Comments: Wind and some rain. The wind and rain on the bike didn't bother me a bit, it helped me stay nice and cool. The wind was just off-set enough to be an ever so slight tailwind down and opposite on the way back. I wore my HRM on the bike this year to keep myself away from redlining like I did last year that hurt my run, kept it at 160 +/- which is low Z4. I got caught in a heavy downpour about 1/2 mi or so before turning back onto Oak St but the nice thing was that the wind picked up and shifted a bit to ESE and had a nice tailwind before and back down Oak and in from there. What would you do differently?: Nothing, stayed to the plan and didn't over cook the legs. Transition 2
Comments: Took long enough to put on the running shoes and then grab all my wearable's and left putting my visor and belt as I was running out. Flying dismount was perfect, was catching two guys coming down the chute into T2 but they were didn't boggle the dismounts to cause a mess. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I saw the clock leaving T2 and knew I had a chance at a sub 1:20 if the run held together. Legs felt good right off but my GPS watch wouldn't lock on at the start so I said screw it and ran my feel with no idea what I was doing. Caught and passed a neighbor before 1 mi and passed 3 guys in AG between 1 and <3.2 miles. After each one I was "running scared" so they wouldn't catch me! Some rain around 2 mile mark was real nice and was able to stay focused all the way in. What would you do differently?: Nothing, pace goal was 7:45 and blew that away with 7:28. Post race
Warm down: Talked with some other athletes at the finish area then found my wife & friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: What else, more SBR training! If I do Syr 70.3 next year I should be in great shape for this event. Event comments: Plenty of post race food and beer (all free). Much better crowd control and early body marking & chip pickup line was well organized. Last updated: 2014-05-09 12:00 AM
