Pre-race routine:

I got up at 6:00, had cereal for breakfast, foregoing my usual banana because I knew there would be some at the race site if I wanted one. I left for the race site at 7:00 and was parked by 7:25. It was drizzling so I sat in the car until 7:30 and then walked over to the race start area. The race is hosted by Ridgewood Shopping Center which is anchored by Whole Foods (good post race coffee opportunity!). Since it was spitting cold rain, all of the runners were huddled under the shopping center overhangs. It was kind of funny to see the parking practically empty which it is normally teaming with runners! I made use of the port-o-pot and then huddled with the other runners. At 7:50, they announced that it was time to head to the starting line on Ridge Road.
Event warmup:

When they announced that we should head to the start, I did a jog around the parking lot and some dynamic stretches, getting in about five minutes of warm up before five minutes of standing and then the run.

Comments:

Chilly for the first mile but even as we were running, the sky was clearing a bit. At this event, everyone seems to take the first mile too fast -- excited to work off the turkey before eating it but also it's slightly downhill on the way out.

We entered a hilly neighborhood just before the second mile marker and we stayed there for a mile or so. I tried to stick with the runners in around me going up the hills and that went pretty well considering my lack of hill work.
What would you do differently?:

Not dislocate my shoulder in September, resulting in surgery and a lot of time away from running.
Post race
Warm down:

I went into Whole Foods and got a cup of coffee!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury, resulting in lack of training. This was only my third outdoor fourth outdoor run since my injury. I was released to run/walk on November 6th. I did four run/walk workouts and then five runs (four outdoors) and then this event.

Event comments:

This is a great race. It is and MS fundraising event and it sells out each year. There were 3100 entries this year in two classes (competitive where you get a long sleeve performance shirt and timing chip and recreation where you get a cotton t shirt and no timing chip). There is also a kids mile and a kids dash as well as custom division and best hat.

This was my seventh straight Ridgewood Turkey Trot. I look forward to doing it again next year!
