Pre-race routine:

Went to bed as soon as the sun went down the night before, so we (my husband ran too--01:31:08...81/309...11/35) were up bright and early Saturday morning. Went to breakfast...had some eggs, fruit, coffee...afraid to eat anything out of the ordinary. Started guzzling water. Went to the bathroom a zillion times.
Event warmup:

Got to the beach early as the lifeguard told us to. Got a nice bike spot, laid our stuff out...stared at it to make sure we didnt forget anything. Talked to a bunch of people, tried to not be nervous. Decided to go for a swim to warm up and to cool down at the same time. The sun got hot real quick. Water was nice...pretty calm. We're thinking, 'Hey this is going to be OK!'...
Swim
  • 00m
  • 440 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

My watch appparently broke during the swim, so I dont have times for the swim, bike, and run seperately. Wow...being my first tri (and first real OWS) I think I didnt know what to expect. Every forum I ever read here told me to stay to the outside. But then I figured if I stayed to the inside, it would be less ground to cover. I was tired before I even started swimming from the adrenelin(sp?)and the run into the water. I never got into a rhythm..so I just muscled through.
What would you do differently?:

Calm down running into the water...actually practice OWS (we trained for barely 4 weeks...ran out of time to get into OW)
Transition 1
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Awesome transition! Threw down my cap and goggles which were off as soon as I exited the water. Put on bike shoes (no socks, sandy feet, didnt care), helmet, shades and I was off!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Bike
  • 00m
  • 12 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

I was never so happy to get on my bike than after that swim! I passed a bunch of mountain bike people based on the sheer fact that my bike is lighter. The hills were tough for my legs, but I persevered! I still need to work on cornering, I lost some time there.
What would you do differently?:

More practice on my bike= more comfortable= more speed
More leg strength= climb hills like a machine!
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Awesome again! I didnt fall off my bike trying to unclip my peddles, instead it was the best I ever did. Then I picked up my bike and jogged to the rack!!! I must have looked like Ive done this before! Took everything off (helmet, shades, bike shoes), slipped my running shoes on, grabbed two cups of water..drank one and poured one on over my head and was off to the beach.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 00m
  • 4 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Wow was it crowded. Kind of motivating though to have so many people watching. Some cheered, some looked at us like we were crazy, some just pretended nothing was going on. I gave two small kids a high five. The run is my strong suit and I felt great. I stayed on the hard part of the sand. My sneakers got soaked probably 5 seperate times, but it actually cooled me down so I didnt mind that much.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade, water, banana, jump back into the water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing the course as well as I would have liked.

Event comments:

Beautiful course and great people. I wish there would have been a bigger deal post race (awards, congrats, etc)...everyone just kind of dispersed and went to the beach to chill. It has to be tough to organize a race like this at an open town beach on a gorgeous day. We want to go back next year and stay longer..we had to leave that evening.
WE DID IT!!! OUR FIRST TRI WAS A SUCCESS! We are still on our natural high telling everyone we know...Thanks to everyone at BT.com, we learned a lot from everyone in the forums!
