Pre-race routine:

On Friday evening Kevin, Zoe, and I drove to Goldsboro where we spent the night. It was about a 90 minute drive. Zoe had a hard time settling down in the hotel room (but she was a champ using the elevator).

In the morning, I had a bagel with peanut butter, a banana and a bottle of water with Nuun. I also had a small cup of coffee.

We left the hotel to for the race site just after 7:00. The race site was about 15 minutes away. When we got there, I went to packet pickup, dropped my stuff at the car, put the race number on my belt, took off the sweats I had on over my running tights and went out for a warm up run.
Event warmup:

It was 27 degrees when we left the hotel a little after 7:00. It was sunny but the wind was from the north and had a bite to it. We drove 10-15 minutes to the race site and I picked up my packet. Then I went back to the car, pulled off the sweat pants I had on over might tights and took off my coat and went for a warm up run. I kept it to about ten minutes because they had a "mandatory" pre-race meeting during which the sponsors were thanked and we were reminded to run facing traffic. (In other words, I could have missed this.) After the meeting, the half marathon runners shuffled towards the start area and the 5k runners went back to waiting in line for the port-o-pt. I did some in place warm ups like leg swings. Then everyone went still for the national anthem and we were off. There was no starting mat so we all had a gun time only.

Comments:

For the first mile or so I tried to find a group to run with. By mile three I was running alone and trying to catch the Guy in the White Shirt. I passed him at about mile 8 but he passed me back around mile 10.

I had a gel at mile 3 and 9 and water at about mile 8. There were about eight water stations on the route but only two were manned (we passed each of these twice so I guess half were manned) and of those two, only one had water. The other station had gatorade only.

I stayed on my target pace until about the tenth mile when my calves started to cramp up. I was able to keep on running but my pace suffered a little bit.

Overall, I was happy with how things went.
What would you do differently?:

No calf cramps.
Post race
Warm down:

Kevin and Zoe met me at the finish line. We then went back towards the car and I changed into a dry shirt and put in a polartec. They had chocolate milk, pizza (including dessert pizza), and bananas.

Event comments:

This was a nice event and I think that they did a good job with the post race activities. I was disappointed that they advertised ten aid stations and they had fewer than that and most were unmanned. One of the things that I look forward to in a race is not having to carry my own water! Overall, though, this was a good event if you like small races.
