Swim
Comments: A lot of leftward drift, probably added 50 yards to the swim. Effort was just right, felt ready to go on the bike. Long, uphill run to transition from the waterfront. What would you do differently?: Sight more, "aim" slightly right to offset leftward drift. Transition 1
What would you do differently?: Thinking about going back to mountain bike shoes for better running speed/ maneuverability out of transition and easier (2-sided) clip-in. Started in 4th gear in anticipation of a fairly steep hill shortly after transition, but should have in a little taller gear for the short flat before. Bike
Comments: PB for Sprint leg pace. Towards the end, I was feeling the extra distance of this segment compared to usual Sprint race. What would you do differently?: Went just a little too hard, paid for it on the run. I'm fast in the water, slow on the bike; need to do a better job of staying right to facilitate the freight train of riders that will inevitably come by me. Not sure the Fizik Tritone is the right saddle for me. Transition 2
Run
Comments: No legs on the run today, pace very quickly climbed over 8:00/mile and calves started to feel like they were on the verge of cramping. Too much effort on the bike? Maybe, or perhaps not enough training over vacation and in the following week. What would you do differently?: Think I need more "long and slowish" run and bike training to help with the late race endurance. Post race
Warm down: Walked, stretched on my own, then went to the physio tent to have my calves rolled and more stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Gotta bike a lot more if I ever want to get good at this triathlon thing. Event comments: Replacement for the "Rodney T Miller Memorial Triathlon," many of the same key folks in charge. No pros anymore, and only one course length option, but still very well organized, and SUPER community support. There seemed to be at least as many volunteers as competitors, and the local Police and Sheriffs had the entire bike and run courses closed to outside traffic. Huge tent at the finish for plenty of shade while waiting for results/awards. Nice SWAG (your choice of a Boco visor or trucker hat). For a small, local Sprint, this event feels like a "big deal."
