Comments:

I wasn't pushing it, but I held a better pace than I expected. For a change, I caught some short drafts.
Transition 1
  • 04m 42s
Comments:

Took my time, sprayed on sun screen, etc.
Bike
  • 3h 10m 43s
  • 57.2 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
Comments:

I lost a bottle at some point, and coming back into the park my rear storage popped open twice on the expansion joints. I felt good at the 2/3 mark, but the last 1/3 we had a tough headwind into the uphill section of the course. I quickly realized my 3 hour goal was blowing away.

What would you do differently?:

I probably overbiked, given my run issues. I did hold my aero position pretty well, only getting out when I was climbing at less than 12 mph, although with the wind I probably should have stayed down more.
Transition 2
  • 04m 34s
Comments:

Took my time again.
Run
  • 2h 20m 11s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Ouch... This was humbling. Coming off the bike, I could feel my quads were close to cramping, so I tried to take it easy. But after about 4 miles, the wheels came off, and my walk breaks got longer and longer. My stomach was also "sloshy", so I didn't take in any calories to speak of, just water.

What would you do differently?:

I think I need to train to effectively run at a slower pace. I also need to figure out my fueling, so I don't have stomach issues next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with my family, rested a bit, then enjoyed the nice lunch. Official results here: https://www.athlinks.com/event/30324/results/Event/855956/Course/158...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The wind definitely affected everyone (top 5 times were 10-20 minutes slower than last year). My swim was better than expected, my run much worse than expected. Still thrilled to have hit the podium on my first half-Ironman.

Event comments:

Great race with a very family friendly venue. My wife said it was the best race so far for her to cheer me on with our 5- and 7-year-old boys. They could play on the swings or hang around the beautiful lake waiting for me.
