Pre-race routine:

Got up 3 hours before the start and got in the shower to help wake myself up. Let the dogs outside and loaded the bike onto the Jeep. Called Jeane on the way to the race and thankfully she had found my HRM in her car (she gave me a ride to track practice at SMU a few days before). That was a big relief because I really didn't want to have to use my Garmin and not have the HR data to go on the new power meter.
Event warmup:

Aired up my tires and adjusted my rear brakes. They were lined up correctly but for some reason they weren't releasing quite as quickly as they should. Finally had to just open them up and would have to make do with very little rear braking power today. It was a flat course and no technical turns so I wasn't concerned.

Rode my 10 minute warm up on the course and it was a bit chilly. Got back to the Jeep and grabbed the rest of my stuff and headed to transition. Set my spot up and almost immediatly Rick (one of my Ironhead teammates) started pounding me with questions about the new ride. Apparently he was considering the same frame becuase he had never seen someone with it and I ruined all his grand schemes. Of course, that's one of the reasons I got it.

Headed out on my run warm up before the pre-race meeting. Got back just in time to down a gel and weigh myself before the first wave started. Ran into Derek(tri-golfer) and said hi. Looked around at the calves in the crowd in only found one other guy in my age group.

40+ was the first wave so I had 3 minutes to wait before it was time to bring the pain.

Comments:

Started at the front of the pack knowing that I was supposed to push the first run at LT or higher. The rabbits took off right away and within the half mile I had fallen off the front pack but also had a good gap ahead of the 2nd pack.

Grabbed a cup of water from the aid station and could already feel the hurting in my legs. Started to pass the slower guys in the first wave and hit the first mile marker at 5:48. That's my fastest mile ever.

Hit the aid station again and I was starting to crack. All I could do was gasp for air and try to hang on. I was surprised to see the mile 2 marker just before the last curve so the runs must have been just over a 2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

That's as hard as I've ever run. HR was a bit low but still a damn good job on my part.
Transition 1
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Put my helmet on as I wiggled out of my running shoes. Grabbed my bike and ran. Unfortunately they didn't post my transition splits on the results so I have no idea what my real time was. So I used 30 seconds for all of them but the last.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Very smooth T1.

Comments:

I crushed this course. Caught three guys on the road leading to the dam and never let up from there. Passed up Rick pretty early on and was steadily moving through the first wave and even the faster runners in my wave. First ride was supposed to be above LT as well but my legs were dead from the run. All I could feel was pain in my quads. My only option was the grit my teeth and keep hammering to make this end as soon as possible.

Looked for the guy in green who was in my age group but didn't catch him before the turn around. Ride on the way out seemed quick but then felt like it took forever on the way back. Flew past the other guy in my AG half way back down the dam. He was obvious a really good runner so I'd need to put some time on him to make sure I could catch him on the last ride.

Downed a gel once I was off of the dam and started to get myself ready to run again. Climbed out of my shoes and coasted into transition.
What would you do differently?:

That ride hurt. It was outrageously fast but it hurt. Goal was LT+ and I just couldn't keep my HR there, but I tried as hard as I possibly could.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Shoes on, helmet off, put my flag together as I jogged and then back to full stride out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Only thing that could have gone better was knowing my actual time.

Comments:

Made it all of a tenth of a mile before I got passed and was back to 2nd in my AG. Damn that guy could run. By the way he was pulling away from me I estimated that he'd put at least 2 if not 3 minutes on me before the last bike.

Kept my stride constant and didn't worry about chasing anyone down. Just kept my heart rate in my race zone and hydrated as much as I could at the aid station. Split at the mile 1 marker was about a minute slower than the first run.

From there I just focused on maintaining that pace and being as effecient as I could. Saw the guy winning our AG riding out of transition as I made the last turn on the run. Time to start the real race.
What would you do differently?:

Could have run faster without pushing my HR out of my race zone.
Transition 3
  • 11m
Comments:

A little slow getting up to speed because my shoes were obviously no longer rubber banded in place. The strap on my left shoe had come out of the loop so I had to take a few extra seconds to thread it through.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I don't loosen my shoe strap too much coming off the first bike.

Comments:

My legs felt much better this time. I could feel the fatigue but none of the pain in my legs from the other ride. Seemed to be oddly alone on the road until we got on the dam and then it was back to work at picking off slower people.

Only took a few minutes before I had passed up Rick again. Then I saw Patrick (another Team Ironhead guy) walking his bike down the dam. He must have had a flat so now I was first place on the team if I had counted correctly.

Once I saw the lead guys coming back the other way I looked over just enough to see if they were the guy in the green shirt. Finally I saw at the base of the hill where the turn around was. Right then I knew the age group win was mine.

Made the turn and coasted a bit on the down hill before really hammering to catch the lead. Passed the guy up like he was standing still. The final run was just a tiny fraciton of a mile so I knew if I got back to transition first I would win.

Moved up a few more spots before coming off the dam. Made the turn after the guard station at the front of the park and looked back to see who was chasing. Not a person in sight! Kept powering down the road as I got out of my shoes, but didn't worry about passing the guy ahead of me. He was 48 so he started in the first was and I was actually 3 minutes ahead of him.

Time for the fastest transition of my life.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing; great ride.
Transition 4
  • 00m 9s
Comments:

Threw my bike on the rack by one brake lever and ran out of transition in a dead sprint. Didn't bother with shoes and still had my aero helmet on.
What would you do differently?:

Can't get much faster than this.

Comments:

50 meter sprint from transition to the finish line. Lots of great race photos of people running in socks and their helmets.
What would you do differently?:

7 seconds doesn't leave much time to change anything.
Post race
Warm down:

Caught my breath and headed to my Jeep to grab my Endurox and weigh myself before getting something to eat. Had a great time watching people finish. Some put on their running shoes, most still had their helmets on and just wore socks.

Turns out that I put a good two minutes on the guy I passed in the 2nd half of the last ride.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not really tapered for this race, but it also wasn't an important race either. Only mistake was that I forgot to recalibrate my power meter after I put on my race wheels/cassette so my wattage data was useless.

Event comments:

The new course inside the park was great. The ride on the dam was outrageously fast! I'll definitely be back.
