Run
Comments: Eric did well in the run, ran faster on both legs than his 10K time would indicate. Problem was the other team had a young runner who ran 5:30 splits on both ends, actually finished first overall on each run. After this leg, we were 2:07 behind the lead relay team. What would you do differently?: Get Kevin Castille (local 28-minute 10Ker) to do the run part. ;) Transition 1
Comments: Time estimated, but transition times were minimal. I already had shoes and helmet on, so transition consisted of handing off the race belt/number and running the 30' length of the transition area. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: As said, wind was out of the northeast, sustained at 15-18mph with gusts, making for a headwind on the first half of the course. Probably stayed around 17-19mph on this segment, trying hard not to fry my legs. Did have a few people pass me, some who really shouldn't, indicating how my conditioning has dropped during this offseason. After the turn it was 24-25 mph on the way back, but not fast enough where I actually passed anyone. Couldn't even catch the rider for the lead relay team, though I did make up 1:45, so that we were only 22 seconds behind coming out of T2. What would you do differently?: Eh, stay in shape over the winter? Hard to do without running, given my dislike of the trainer and cold-weather riding. Well, at least spring is right around the corner. This was only 30 seconds faster than my bike leg in this race last year, under similar conditions. Would expect it to be considerably faster, given that no running was involved. Transition 2
Comments: Similar to T1, left the shoes on the pedals, though. For some reason Eric was standing at the transition exit rather than by our rack, so I had to find him first, then run the length of the transition area with my bike, but no big deal. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Another good leg from Eric, only 17 seconds slower than his first leg, and 10th overall. Still, the lead relay team runner ran 11:11, first overall, only 12 seconds slower than his first leg, and they regained their advantage. We finished in second by 2:34. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Eric ran well, just can't keep up with the young guys. ;) Post race
Warm down: Stood around and cheered on finishers, gave unwelcome advice to mama bear when she came in off the bike ("Take your helmet off before the run," should not merit a GFY look!), ate three bowls of red beans, then hung around to get our award. What limited your ability to perform faster: Too much accumulated rust in these old bones, not to mention the extra 15 pounds. Event comments: Nice small, early-season race. This group puts on several small races during the year, all of them well-organized and well-supported affairs. Hope to be back doing it solo next year. Last updated: 2007-01-19 12:00 AM

I haven't run since December 9th, when I hurt my foot in a marathon. Since mama bear was doing this race, I thought about doing it as a relay. First asked the twins, but they poo-pooed the idea, so I got a co-worker, Eric, to race with me. Eric is a little younger than I, he finished seconds behind me at last fall's Cajun Cup 10K, so he's at about the same performance level.
Woke up at 4:30, bagels, coffee, shower, shave, got stuff together, and was out the house by 6. Met Eric at the bank for 6:30, were at race site before 7.
Set up bike in transition area, then found the RDs and asked about relay rules. Then rode three miles out on course and back at various intensities, discovered first-hand that the wind was brutal going out.
