Swim
Comments: There were two new things for me: 1. putting my face in the water and seeing nothing! I've swam in the ocean, but it was in Bermuda, where you could see the bottom. So that was very disorienting. And also I wasn't prepared for all the kicking others, being kicked, etc. Each time I would sort of pop-up and look around. So it was very hard to get a rhythm going. After about 1/2 way, it thinned out enough that I just put my face down and swam well. What would you do differently?: Ignore the people bumping into me better. Breathe on every stroke in the beginning until I get into a nice rhythm. Transition 1
Comments: the 8:28 includes a pretty long barefoot run. I went pretty slow on this just to avoid stubbing a toe or anything. My T1 was pretty good. Could have been a bit better about getting suit off left heel. Hadn't practiced shoes clipped in start, so maybe could have saved a few seconds there. Other than that it was pretty good. What would you do differently?: Learn the shoes already clipped-on start. Run with bike. Maybe faster run from swim exit to T1 Bike
Comments: Swim rank was 297. Bike rank was 296. I guess I have equal amounts of improving to do on both swim and bike. My odometer read 25.5, so maybe it's not calibrated correctly. Either way, I was pretty happy with the 17mph average. Drank a whole wb full of gatorade (watered) and a whole wb full of water during the ride. Ate one Gel and part of a power bar. SO MANY POTHOLES, etc! What would you do differently?: Just improve my bike strength overall. Transition 2
Comments: Basically walked my bike the whole way as my legs were pretty heavy. This was my 2nd or 3rd longest ride ever, so it was somewhat unchartered territory for me. Run
Comments: i was thinking "Whaa?? how am I gonna run on these legs". 1st mile was fairly flat but slightly uphill overall down 72nd into the park. I ran it in exactly 9:00 which was pretty decent since I couldn't feel my legs. Once I hit the park there was an aid station and a little Accelerade got me going. Mile 2 was actually 7:47 which I realized was too fast. Then next three miles were all 8:51 which was a very decent pace through the North Hills. I alternated accelerade and water at each station. Mostly pouring the water over my head. I also nibbled a little of the power bar I had left. I had to chew it until it was liquid in order to swallow it, but I felt like it helped. Once I hit mile 5 the course was flat and down and I opened it up for a strong 9:15 last 1.2 miles (about a 7:40 pace!). Very nice to pass a lot of people and finish so strong. Moved up 98 places on the run compared to Swim and Bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Walked around the post-race activity and then walked to boat basin (1 mile) What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of confidence in the swim. Lack of training on the bike. Event comments: I really can't tell what kind of swimmer I am because this swim does not test your ability to deal with waves and also the current aids you so much. I am going to try some Sprints to get a better feel for my swimming skills. If I can get more comfortable swimming, I think I will enjoy this sport a lot. Overall, I'm very pleased with my 1st Triathlon! Thanks to everyone who offered support, encouragement, tips, advise, help, inspiration, etc. Last updated: 2007-02-07 12:00 AM

Transition closed at 5:45am. So I setup my transition area Saturday night and covered my T1 and T2 piles with ponchos. Then tucked the ponchos under the shoes. This allowed me to sleep until 6am and get to the race at about 7am instead of getting up at 4am and getting there at 5, only to sit around for 3 1/2 hours. I was a little nervous that my transition stuff would be disturbed but it was exactly as I left it! Breakfast: Banana, water with a little gatorade in it, cereal bar, 3/4 of a whole wheat bagel.
None, just stretching and ate one gel. BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER TO RACES! I wont go into further details.
