Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am. Toasted up a bagel and had some water. Packed the car in the pouring rain and made my way to the course for my first ever triathlon.
Event warmup:

Set up transition. Talked with a few of the ESCKTC members. Froze. It was so cold before the race
Swim
  • 08m 36s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was my best ever 400m performace. The only thing I could have been better at was breathing every three strokes instead of every one stroke. Halfway through the swim I was just getting caught up in the excitement and pace that I had to breathe every stroke.

What would you do differently?:

Stayed more relaxed in the beginning...my start was a little too fast for me and I think it caused me to throw off my technique of breathing every three stokes...
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Everything went according to plan except for the fact my bike jersey got stuck halfway on. I just got everything else on and then fixed it at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a slightly bigger jersey that would be easier to get on when wet.
Remember to put on my heart rate monitor!!!
Bike
  • 53m 8s
  • 14.86 miles
  • 16.78 mile/hr
Comments:

My results on the bike were almost exactly what I expected. I had hoped to average 16.5mph, so I exceeded that, so I am happy. My second lap was faster than my first and I was gaining speed on some of the hills.

Around mile-10 I started to realize that my coxic bones (tailbone) were starting to really hurt. I didn't know then but I realize now that I was sitting further up on my seat. I usually can't get my hands completely in the hoods but yesterday I did which leads me to believe that I slid forward (maybe because of the wet pants) I have never had issues with my seat before or having any pain (in the butt) until yesterday. This pain hurt me on the run which you will see below...
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I am sitting on my saddle like I normally do. Spend more time on the bike in tri-shorts to get my butt used to the seat. I never had issues before wearing them while riding, so maybe yesterday with the cold and wetness it was a fluke thing.

DRINK MORE WATER...it was so cold it was easy to forget.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

I nearly fell off the bike trying to swing my leg over to get off of it. The long run to the bike rack was only made more difficult when some lady had her kid with her walking through tansition.
What would you do differently?:

Took a little more time to tie my shoes. They were a little too tight at the top.
Run
  • 45m 58s
  • 3.6 miles
  • 12m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

About a quarter mile into the race I ran off course. I basically followed the two people in front of me across the street where the other runners were coming from...not sure why I thought I should be over there...so I ran at least two minutes before getting back on course...so my time should have been better than what it was.

I was in so much pain from my tailbone that anytime I had to run uphill, which was bascially the first two miles, I could barely propel myself forward. I then had a major cramp in my stomach which was a killer as well. I need to remember to drink more water...it was tough to do because it was so cold out.

Once I reached the top of the climb and started to decsend, running became easier and the pain wasn't as bad.

I know I could have had a way better run if I wasn't hurting as much, but I will chalk it up to experience for the next race.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on course...

Drink more...

Nothing I could do about the pain...thought I managed it well.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the facility. Watched the ladies race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As mentioned before...my tailbone...and...running the wrong way.

Event comments:

Tanya (StandsWithFist) warned me about how they start everyone in the pool and she was bang on. Basically we had to line ourselves up, trying to figure out everyone's times and where to stand. Luckily I guessed right because I only got passed once and I passed one person.

The transition to the run was ridiculous...having to hurdle three curbs in a narrow passage way is a recipe for disaster.

Even though ultimately its my fault for running off course it was tricky to navigate when the way it leads you is a path right by the finish line making you think you might be going the wrong way.

I am happy with my results outside of the run. I know what I need to do to get better and I will train even harder now to reach my goal of improving on my next race.
